is there ever enough? no, but that is not my question.
i was speaking to chris the other day about our finances. i think we shoudl just combine our accounts now. we have 1 joint savins, but 2 seperate checking accounts. since we are getting married in less then a year, i think it makes sense. how are you guys handling this aspect of getting married?
and ps - he wants to, but after christmas/new years. so most likley this is what we'll do

we have a joint account and both have our own accounts-half of our checks go into the joint and the other half is ours.

Re: money money money money
We have one joint savings account - the wedding fund. I don't think we will combine our checking accounts until after the wedding but definitely then.

Re: money money money money
We're having everything joined exept I'm having a separate checking account also. We decided this because I really like to buy gifts and hate when people know how much I spent. And I didn't like that whenever I got money out (he likes to know where all the money goes) for a gift for him he will know. So that's what the account is going to be for, so not a lot of money in it. I know it's silly because he'll probably know anyway, it's just to make me feel better I guess. I'm weird!

Re: money money money money
We've had one joint checking account and we each have our own separate account. Each month we have a set amount of money entered into our account by direct deposits from our paychecks. We use this account for all our bills. Our accounts are for our separate bills or for fun money.
*The one thing i learned from my parents divorce is that make sure you have your own account and your own money. I know you wouldn't ever like to think of your marriage not working out, but please be smart about it. Sometimes life doesn't always work out how you expect. Just a thought.

We have our own checking accts and a joint savings.
We can each handle our own bills (cars, phones, etc) so we just plant all the extra in savings and transfer some out if we need it.

sometimes this is a bigger deal than the actual marriage is LOL. men and money + wife or girlfriend (sometimes)= insecurity. I am not saying that is the case here, but for many reasons, this is a touchy subject.
right now we have separate accounts. we will open a joint checking account soon, but we will both maintain separate accounts as well. the thing we have to do is figure out how to divide our income up- do we put 50-50 into the joint account (he would end up paying more in since he makes more) OR put in a set amount, retaining a set amount for ourselves (he would save more b/c he makes more)
ugh....your post topic is right!

see, we are in the same boat jess. he is able to save more b/c he makes more. and i don't want him to think i'll be using his money to shop and whathaveyou.
i just think it would make sense to only have 2 accounts - saving and checking. i mean, he agrees with me, but was very skeptical at first. ah, well see

what I am thinking of doing is a cost analysis. there are bills that we have separately now (cc's, student loans, HUGE CAR PAYMENT-FH) he takes more $$ home, but with the car payment, we probably break at least close to even savings wise.
it just sux b/c for trips and stuff, I'm not sure how they would be 'funded' using the 'house account' or paying separately, using the money we would retain for ourselves...if that's the case, he'll be going on better trips than I will! (and dressing better too! LOL)

Re: money money money money
again, same thing. he makes more but has more debt then i do.
my car is almost paid off, he has another 2 years on his - and he is paying double what i am. i really only spend my $$ on clothes - he wore a uniform to work for the first 2 years so he thinks he needs to go clothes shopping - he has more clothes then me to begin with
so we'll have to look at it on paper and see whats what.
eta- as far as trips, there are none in our immediate future, aside from HM. that we'll just have to plan as it happens.

John and I opened up a joint savings and checking once we got engaged. When the wedding is coming close I will get rid of my personal account.

Re: money money money money
we have been planning on opening a new joint account and getting rid of the personal accounts but are unsure which bank we will use...not FHs, maybe mine or a totally new one...it will make life easier, we think, to just have it all together and start saving etc

Re: money money money money
This is such a touchy subject:
We had separate accounts, but he's really bad paying his bills, I was always nagging him to pay them, so now he get's his check directly deposited into my account. I pay all his bills and give him whatever is left over. We're opposite, I make more than he does. After the wedding we decided on the following:
Joint checking account - bills, household expenses, etc. - 50/50 Joint savings account for house - 50/50
Seperate savings account - whatever is left over for us!!!

Re: money money money money
we have joint savings but separate checking. after the wedding we will combine our checking accounts to pay the bills. but the best advice my mom ever gave me was no matter what, always keep a separate bank account for yourself that is just 'your' money (like $50 from every paycheck that FH doesn't have access to). you never know what could happen!
