I am full of questions today because I am actually getting my azz in gear this weekend and getting some things done.
Ok so I am doing the monogram topper. It is wood, so I have to paint it. My colors are Red and Black with hints of orange here and there.
Here are my color stones I got also. I have 3 letters, (2) 4' on the sides and (1) 7' in the middle. The middle will be clear crystals and the sides will be a mix of the orange and red.
My question is, what color do I paint the letters before I put the crystals on, Silver or Black??
IMO, silver. However, your colors are black, red, orange so if the black showed through it wouldn't be that bad. I'm concerned on how the silver stones will shine w/ a black background. Try it out on a scrap piece.

Re: MONOGRAM TOPPER ADVICE
Bari- I am on my second monogram cake topper. I ordered a silver one and then messed it up and had to order another one. Here are some tips of what I did. It's a pain in the azz but it's better than spending the money to redo it again.
I drew the outline of the monogram on a white piece of paper.
Then I figured out how I wanted the stones arranged (size, color, pattern)
I did some of it on the paper to get an idea of how it would look and fit.
Once I got it the way I wanted it I took off the stones and got to the real thing.
For the glue I did it in two inch lines at a time. With an eraser I would pick up and place each stone next to each other and then make them fit nicely together.
Look in my album for the pics and please FM me if you have any questions or need any help!

Re: MONOGRAM TOPPER ADVICE
I'd say silver. However, since paint is so cheap, I'd probably paint a piece of paper in each color and then see how it looks. Also, don't think of the letters individually, but collectively. I was happy how the letters looked individually, but when put together I wasn't happy with the design, so I started from scratch again. I am happy to say that I think my plan is almost final now except I need to order more crystals and start gluing what I do have.
Take Jiffy's advice and do test runs. I'm so happy that I didn't glue mine cause I would have been soooo unhappy with the results. Maybe I should get off my ar$e and start gluing some.
HTH
FM me if you need any help along the way.
