For those of you that have been planning your wedding for some time now or already got married, what do you think are the most important checks to accomplish first? Someone mentioned to me that its important to book the rooms for the hotel right away. Is this true?

Most important checks?
I think whatever vendors are important for your specific wedding you should book first. For instance I wanted to get married at my childhood church -- so our first stop was the church to make sure they had our day open, and then we went from there.
For instance, if a certain style video or music is top priority, do those vendors ASAP and leave other things for later.
I did the hotel block when I had free time and it took barely any time at all. I did this recently because I have alot of out of town guests. Booking early was a good idea for this because I locked in a good price, and also they have a shuttle that will go back and forth between my RH and the hotel for the guests so that they don't have to drive. Try to use a recommended hotel for your RH and you might get a similar deal. HTH!
ETA: I fell in love with one videographer and figured my wedding was over 1 year away, so why rush to book him. Well I casually called him about a month ago and he told me my date is booked. I was like... excuse me??? lol.

For me it was Venue first, then Photographer lol. I have to have an over all cohesive look and needed the hall to base my other choices off of (color, theme, decor etc) and a tiny budget, so I started Venue searching at 20 months out lol. I'm glad because I got 2012s prices, first pick at a date, and was able to find one I love in my budget. After that I think Photography was most important FH thought DJ, Well I won and we booked Photographer next. lol Don't worry about FH lol the check after that one was DJ. But to go back to the question I think After venue I would look into Photo and DJ before Hotel. We have a Holiday Wedding and I don't want them so I'm looking now, but some Hotels wont even reserve a block more than a year out, so I think you have time for that.
edited for horrible spelling

I picked the 3 things that were most important to me and got them done first: venue/ceremony site, dj and photographer. From here on out, I'm trying to tackle one or two things a week until I get through the rest of my list.

It's good you have those big checks done. As far as music, you should book a few appointments with bands and DJ's and give yourself time to decide what you like best. Music sets the tone for the entire wedding. We are having a band and they also are doing some music for our cocktail hour which I thought was so nice. If you have any questions on the band let me know!

I definitely don't think hotels are the most important. I haven't even looked into that yet. My top priority was finding a date that my reception hall had in common with my church. After that, my top was photo/video.

We did reception venue, church, photo, video, DJ.. Hotel is not the most important, since it is highly unlikely that they will be all booked on your date. You're on the right track. We chose a DJ only because we didn't have the budget for a band..

We did venue, Church, hotel block, DJ and my dress. I'm really feeling the pressure to book a photographer. Once I do that I'm not going to stress out too much about anything else for a while.

We booked RH, church, band, and photographer/videographer all within a month and in that order. Those were important to us and everything else could wait a bit.

We just booked Tommy Tunes. They have gotten great reviews and I work with 3 couples that used them and had nothing but great things to say. I can't wait!

It all depends on the weekend your wedding falls on... Summertime is usually busy for weddings, so a hotel block would be important to do pretty early. We are memorial weekend and the hotel was the 2nd thing we booked (the church and RH were first)
