My sister (Pandafish519) had all of the moms shop at Macy's, Lord & taylor and Bloomingdales-- they got BEAUTIFUL dresses for extremely great prices. For my BIL's wedding my MIL bought her's at David's Bridal
My wedding was first and no one knew, but my MIL and mom spent over $700 on their dresses for my wedding from a bridal shop-- under $200 on the ones they got at Macy's and David's!

My mom got her dress at Bloomingdales. It was originally over $500 but it was on sale and she had a coupon! They didn't have it on the store, but she ordered it online and it came to $288 with tax and shipping!

Re: mother of bride dress - under $300 - please help
We got my mom's at My Daughter's Wedding II in Great Neck. We went in and the lady asked us point blank what range we were looking in, and I told her flat-out I wanted something under $200 (I speak for my mom usually -- she's embarrassed to talk about money). The lady was like 'umm...' but started to show us things anyway (maybe to convince us we're crazy, who knows)...
We wanted a dress with a jacket of it (mom's also self-conscious about surgical scars on her arms) -- sort of a tailored suit. As we were going through she's like '$500, $350, $850...' ticking off the prices. My mom and I see one that is PERFECT -- really gorgeous color, exact amount of details, and it's just about 2 sizes too big (my mom is a size 18-20, so this was BIG)... and the price tag said $157! We couldn't believe it, nor could the woman who works there.
We did the alterations there, and in-all it cost less than $200. My mom looked beautiful.
Here's a non-pro shot:
You can't really see the detailing from this shot because it's so bright out, but it's a shimmery fabric with really beautiful details on the collar. It was perfect for our July wedding, and my mom just loved it.
ETA: Oh, I found a better one with the detail:

My mom got her dress at davids bridal... but she ended up liking one of their brides maid dresses rather then MOB dresses.

My mom is wearing a bridesmaid dress, she is young and in good shape, and it looks great on her and was much cheaper that a MOB dress. Pictures in my album.

Try Macy's, JCPenny's, Daffy's and dept stores. My mom purchased her dress from Macy's and spent less than $100.

If your mom is in good shape I say start with the department store or look at Bridesmaid dresses. My MIL pick out a bridesmaid dress and I love it and it was only $175 compared to the $700 dress another shop tried to sell her. She also found one she love in Lord and Taylor for about $300

my mom got her's at My Daughters Wedding too! most of the gowns are relatively expensive but if you look around, you can actually find good ones at a very good price!

Re: mother of bride dress - under $300 - please help
i had looked at Estelles for my mom and they had a few in the regular section as great prices but imo they werent anything spectacular...i walked into the other section of Estelles and they had beautiful dresses but a lot more money (pretty much all over 300).
My mom and grandma went to Macys and both got their dresses. They are both under 300 and are beautiful!!! We tried (The Macys in Roosevelt Field...they tried Manhasset but the selection was much less) (oh, from the regular section, not the bridal salon...Roosevelt field doesnt have a bridal salon anyway)
I went into Davids Bridal with my mom and there was only a few choices that we saw. Our next stop wouldve been My daughters wedding in Great Neck or the other department stores.
