My appointment tonight

My appointment tonight

Baby doesn't want to do his/her headstand.
The midwife told me I have until 37 weeks (which is in 2 weeks) for the baby to turn or I have to decide if I want an external verision or c-section. She said the final decision has to be mine but she would recommend the verision. Yes, there is a chance the baby will turn in this time period but she wants me to begin thinking about what I want to do.
She said she only uses the head of maternal/fetal medicine at LIJ to do the verision and has never had a patient with any problems afterwards. Although he has turned away some patients who were not prime candiates for the procedure. (He has a female OB that works under him that he trained to do the procedure because most of you know I have an adversion to male OBs)
She said, 'I would never tell you that I think something is the right thing to do if it would put you or the baby at risk. But you have to make the final call'
Both ideas $ucks IMO. I am afriad of both the verision and the c-section I am feel very overwhelmed by all of this.

Have they tried to turn the baby? Patrick wouldn't move either. So, I will tell you all the folk lore things that (unfortunately, I didn't have enough fluid for him to move around) didn't work for me but hell it's worth a shot.

-Put a something that's frozen on top of your belly. The cold is supposed to make them move.

-Put a radio in between your legs they might go to the music. (If I had a photo of my husbands face when he came home seeing me doing this!! )

I hope these help!

Re: My appointment tonight

I have been trying everything to make this baby turn. Ironing board, ice packs, music, flashlight, table top position, visualization and relaxation.

I am going for a massage and private relaxation session on Thursday with my hypnobirthing instructor and the massage is with a women who has had sucess with pressure points and the baby turning.....

My fluid levels are fine so that is not the issue.

I hope you can get the baby to move on its own.

I dont have any experience with a verision but a c-section is not too bad. I just wanted to wish you *****FLIP OVER***** luck!

Re: My appointment tonight

I have no experience personally, but a friend of mine had a breech baby on 9/4. Her dr. tried twice to externally turn the baby. The second time resulted in an emergency c-section because the baby's cord was wrapped around her neck and the turning cut off her breathing.

The baby is FINE, but after that scare I don't think it's something I'd attempt.

Just my opinion, of course.

Good luck, this is a BIG decision.

Re: My appointment tonight

I have a feeling the baby is going to turn.

That said - can you explain the external version thing to me?

Re: My appointment tonight

What a stubborn baby. I keep checking to see what's happening and hoping for good news. I'm glad your midwife is not considering a breech delivery. I know that both of your options are things you don't want. I really think a version is a good option for you. I have seen them multiple times, I've done them a few times. They are risks but there are also risks with a section. If its works it was worth it and if it doesn't you still wind up with a section. Usually it works right away or it doesn't work at all. The complications are rare and usually happen with a lot of really vigorous attempts with a baby that really doesn't want to budge. I'm still sending you baby turn vibes but that's my 2 cents.

Edited to explain version.
External cephalic version is when the doctor literally turns that baby from breech to vertex. A sonogram is done to check the position again and then you feel for the baby parts as well. You press on the mother's abdomen and literally push the baby's bottom out of the mother's pelvis and try to direct the head down.

I'm not exactly sure what my mom did with me...from what I understand is that they turned my around in the womb right before I was born...I have a small indintation on my ear from where the forceps 'clipped' me...and I went to school with someone who was 'clipped' in the eyelid...

I don't know if that will play into your decision...

for my mom...I was her second birth and I think usually that is better than the first birthday...

I would keep trying all the methods to turn...and I will be sending {{{baby turn vibes}}}

I wish you luck if you are faced with this decision, but I hope the baby turns beforehand.

Re: My appointment tonight

Oh no Michele!
I guess it all depends on what this external verision consists of. Going by the name, I'm guessing that it's all done from outside, so it must not hurt as much as the other procedure where they actually move the baby internally. What is the harm in doing it? Are there any risks? I know you must be scared at this point. But, IMO if it's between this and a planned c-section. I would try it after knowing all the risks and the success rate. How long can you wait before you do it? Does it have to be at 37 weeks, or can you wait a bit longer?

Re: My appointment tonight

It is done from the outside, not internally. At least the one I would consider is.

I totally do not believe that it doesn't hurt either.

There are risks such as your placenta can come off the wall, or your water can break. But from what I have read those are very rare. This is ONLY done in a hospital because of the risks though. The midwife said that she has never had a patient go to this LIJ doctor and have ANY problems/complications though.

I have to decide at 37 weeks what to do. Who can tell I am not happy today?

Re: My appointment tonight

I had to add that it is uncomfortable but supposedly not that bad. I've only seen one person say it was too much and to stop the procedure. Everyone has a different pain tolerance so its hard to say.
