My Bridesmaid is getting Dreadlocks!

Original post by tdebe

I was talking to one of my bridesmaids yesterday about hair and makeup and she tells me that she's going this weekend to get dreadlocks put into her hair! I don't know anything about them, but isn't the only way they can come out is if you shave your head? I didn't tell her anything because I didn't want to be a biotch and say she can't but I can't imagine how dreadlocks will go well with formal wear.

locks (not dreadlocks, some people are offended when you call it that) can be done very tasteful. It reallly depends on the type of hair a person has. Fine hair is really not meant to be locked, & often looks messy, but if you have a thicker grade of hair and your twists that start the locks are done properly then it will look fine.

I totally agree... hair texture makes a difference with how the locks will turn out.

Sorry, didn't mean to offend anyone, but she called them dreadlocks, so that's what I called them. She does have fine hair. She'll look like Gwyneth Paltrow, with locks. I just can't picture it.

see - that is the issue here. hope i dont offend anyone

BUT a lot of times when white girls get them done - they dont really take care of them ( i am picturing the whole 'hippie' look ) so they end up looking frizzy

for girls and guys with coarser hair texture - they actually stay in nice!

am i not allowed to say stuff like that? LOL let me know and i will delete - dont want to offend!!

eta: i would never say anything to a BM about her hair - it wont be important on that day, i promise!

Honestly, I think they will look fine. One of my girlfriends had dreadlocks for her wedding and she looked fantastic. It wouldn't bother me in the least. Its your wedding, but you may be surprised about how good they look and how versatile they can be.

exactly.

and IMO, I think it's silly to worry about your BMs hair. who really cares anyway? ask the already-married ladies, they'll tell you to not sweat stuff like that. don't cause yourself un-needed stress.

O you didn't offend me...I call the dreadlocks or dreads or locs...it doesn't matter to me.

Now I understand your fear. I was thinking she was African American and getting dreads, now I understand...she's caucasian and getting them...is that right?

If so, I understand why you are upset...not to offend anyone but generally when they are done in that hair type it's not neat or not nearly as neat as it would look in African American hair.

I'm sorry for misunderstanding you . I totally understand you not being too happy about it.

yeah thin hair and dreads hmmmm not the best idea. Tell her for her wedding she wont have hair...i have thin hair and i have to be careful bc anything can ruin it and make it even thinner...Years ago i wanted the tiny, tiny braids and VERY long too, kinda like what christina aguilera did for some award show. Well i was convinced by my stylist not to do it, he said that half my hair will be ripped out when they take them out

i recently saw a girl with dreads she had blonde hair (i think) and it just looked really messy, i think unkept is a good word. her hair kinda looked dirty. i'm assuming that's an example of someone who doesn't take care of them?

Re: My Bridesmaid is getting Dreadlocks!

About the term dreadlocks, I was not offended at all, but some people somtimes do get offended because dreads (Rabia correct me if I am wrong) is a lifestyle, & the dreadlocks described their type of hair. The way the dreads wore their hair is totally different than the way people wear it today.

Nowadays when people have locks (mainly african american) when you approach them and say 'i like your dreads, or dreadlocks' they will get offended and say they are locks...why i dont know & have no clue.

On another note, you really cant control how a person wears their hair even if they are in your wedding. I think it is a little mean to tell someone that you dont like what they are doing with their hair unless you two have that type of relationship where you can say anything to one another.

If she plans on keeping them and maintaining them you have nothing to worry about. I mean it is her hair and her decision as to what she does with it and you shouldn't really get involved in it. JMO

Yup!...but in general even when a caucasian has dreads and tries to take care of them they end up looking unkept because the hair doesn't lock naturally.....hoping I'm not offending anyone.

Well I know some people get offended if you call them a 'Rasta' just because they have dreads. I've never seen anyone get offended by the word dreadlocks...but maybe someone out there is...I just haven't run into them.

And yes, kslmbuggie you are right, Rastas wore their hair totally different than most people with dreads today.

Dirty hippies!!

Well, if she keeps them nice it's one thing, but I have the same image in my mind as most of you girls do and that's what I'm worried about. I don't want to say anything until I see how she keeps up with it, but if she turns into a 'dirty hippy' then should I say something?

Re: My Bridesmaid is getting Dreadlocks!

why do you care if she has dreads? people who have messy dreads would have messy hair either way, if they didn't take care of it! for the wedding, i'm sure she can tie them back or whatever she wants. i think they are cute, in general.

what if she was overweight? would you tell her she has to loose weight so your pictures will look pretty?

anyway, your wedding is 10 months away. maybe she'll be sick of them by then.

also, you do NOT have to shave your head to take them out (maybe if you have thick, curly hair, you might.) it takes a lot of time and conditioner, but you can get them out if you have straight, white-girl hair.

i wouldn't say anything. it'll just piss her off, and if she HAD intended on taking them out before the wedding, she definitely won't if you annoy her about it.

my 2c.
