My Bridesmaid is getting Dreadlocks!

Original post by tdebe

I was talking to one of my bridesmaids yesterday about hair and makeup and she tells me that she's going this weekend to get dreadlocks put into her hair! I don't know anything about them, but isn't the only way they can come out is if you shave your head? I didn't tell her anything because I didn't want to be a biotch and say she can't but I can't imagine how dreadlocks will go well with formal wear.

i honestly don't see a big deal if she was blk with dreadlocks would you care? I don't mean that to be nasty but some white girls look good in them but most do not (i do agree on that) plus she could be getting braids and saying dreadlocks because she is ignorant on hair terms.

If you love her and really want her apart of your day and that is the reason you picked her to be in the wedding party I would just ask her to have an idea on how to wear them with her dress. I wish I had pics of the wedding I went to where everyone had braids and locks and they looked amazing. I really wouldn't panic over it.

Maybe they could be put up for some kind of up-do where you wouldnt notice that much?

Thanks everyone for your responses. I'll just have to wait and see how they come out. It's just so hard for me to picture.

I would just tell her to wear her hair up, that way it would look more like one of those funky updos with the twists and it won't be real noticeable.

I would definetly say something to her. A co-worker decided to go dred a bout a month ago-she looks rediculous and we giver her hell every day about them. And they're not very tight dreads (she has amazing silky blonde hair-don't know what she was thinking) so it just looks like she forgot to comb her hair-for about 3 weeks!

About the term dreadlocks, I was not offended at all, but some people somtimes do get offended because dreads (Rabia correct me if I am wrong) is a lifestyle, & the dreadlocks described their type of hair. The way the dreads wore their hair is totally different than the way people wear it today.

Nowadays when people have locks (mainly african american) when you approach them and say 'i like your dreads, or dreadlocks' they will get offended and say they are locks...why i dont know & have no clue.

On another note, you really cant control how a person wears their hair even if they are in your wedding. I think it is a little mean to tell someone that you dont like what they are doing with their hair unless you two have that type of relationship where you can say anything to one another.

perfectly stated. The lock/dreadlock debate has raged on for awhile but I pick neither side however I am used to 'locks'. As a person with locks I of course am biased and feel that there are many ways that they can be arranged and maintained that will be 'appropriate' for your wedding. I plan to look absolutely ravishing!! for my wedding day...with my locks

One of my good (caucasian) girl friends with fine hair had locks for many years and was able to keep them well maintained and neat. I'm sure if you voice your concerns with your friend she will try to make you happy while making herself happy w/ her locks.
