My card box ----with in-progress pix!

Original post by bluegreen08

Yesterday I went shopping with my grandma for the finishing touches for our bathroom baskets and supplies for my DIY card box!

We started off at JoAnn's Fabric and had amazing luck! They were in the process of unpacking new stock and had a whole stack of cardboard boxes waiting to be tossed. I found the perfect sizes to use for our card box and they let us have them for FREE! (the best price, IMO). I highly recommend going back there if you need boxes.

I wasn't really sure what I wanted for fabric (all of the patterns I liked were black/white and I was looking for blue/white) and in the end I got an ivory/diamond white brocade (they had a stark white version too) that turned out to be 'wedding fabric' My grandma had a coupon so it was super reasonable. I also bought 1/2 a yard of a blue shantung fabric that looks like my BM dresses, that I might use to line the inside. ((DIYers: did you line the inside? If you look straight down you can see some of my glue/tape))

I cut the holes in the boxes (the top slot, and holes in the bottoms and tops of the other boxes) and then covered them in the fabric. I plan to put a layer of blue ribbon around the bottom of each layer, and then add some coral silk flowers I picked up at the dollar store (those and more were $1 total).

I'm probably going to have to wait on the ribbon, because I'm ordering 200yds to use for our favors and programs, and I should probably use it for this too.

Here's an in progress shot (with a ratty piece of fabric in place of the ribbon), a photoshopped version of what it should look like with the ribbon, and the cake that was my inspiration.

Edit: the boxes arent glued down yet, so I might tweak their placement slightly.

it's really not THAT hard! pulling the fabric tight is a little complicated, but you can always buy nice weddingy wrapping PAPER and wrap it that way (maybe something with a nice shimmer). Then you can just wrap it like a package! No hot glue needed!

I'm ordering half a ream of wedding paper to use for our favors so if anyone is interested we could possibly split it or I could give you some.

Great job!

I love things that are free!

How is the ribbon selection at JoAnn Fabrics? I can only seem to find ribbon with the wire in it and I hate that kind of ribbon!

The ribbon selection was actually REALLY lacking. They had hardly anything, and they didnt have a blue I liked (or anything close) which is why we didnt buy ribbon.

They have an entire section of bridal fabric though! We actually bought a second fabric to alternate the boxes with, but made a last minute decision to use the same on all. (the other had a larger design)
