My day from heLL that ended with the word 'INSULIN' :( (long)

Yesterday I had a marathon dr session -- I had the diabetic couselling session from 4:30-5:30 and then my regular OB appt. at 6:45. So I left work at 2:30, getting off the train in Astoria before 3, which would give me MORE then enough time to get to Stewart Ave in Garden City -- NOT!!!!!!!

I got off the train to a monsoon and was trying to walk to my car but having a hard time keeping my shoes on my feet! Then I had to dry them off in order to drive and not for nothing, but that was no easy feat (no pun attended ) to do when I can't really bend the way I used to with the belly in the way!

I hit traffic every which way I went, I took every side street I knew and was moving along ok timewise until I got to Jericho Tpke. Then the skies opened up again and the monsoon came down and I sat at one light for 20 minutes in a car with the windows closed!!!! But the best is, MY BATTERY LIGHT IS NOW FLASHING and I notice that the wipers are going really sllloooooooooooww and the blinkers are kind of working, etc. Great! I now put the car in neutral at every light and am revving the engine so that I can charge the battery because I know the alternator is on the fritz now too.

Get to Glen Cove Rd and what a mess -- the Meadowbrook is closed in BOTH DIRECTIONS, down lines, no traffic lights, you name it, it happened. It is now 4:30 and I'm by Roosevelt Field Mall and already late for the session. Guess who calls? Joe asking where I am. I tell him and made the dumb mistake of telling him about the car -- well Nervous Nellie FLIPS out and starts yelling at me to COME HOME NOW. TURN AROUND AND COME HOME. Um, hello, the LAST thing I want to do at that point is turn my car around and sit in another 2 hours worth of traffic with a car whose battery/alternator is dying to go home!!! Not to mention the fact that I am sweating my balls off and sticking to the seat and HAVE TO PEE LIKE A RACEHORSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I finally get to Stewart Ave. 15 minutes late and peel myself off my seat and try to walk/waddle as fast as I can inside to check in and find the bathroom. At least I wasn't the only one late, some guy came in 10 minutes after me!

Now I leave there and as soon as I step outside Mr. Panic calls me asking where I am and if the car started. I told him I looked at the battery and the light is off and I smell something, which means it's the alternator (listen, I had a 69 Grand Prix and learned smells, etc., so I know what I'm talking about) -- he keeps telling me it's impossible because both the battery & alternator are only 2 years old. Trust me Buddy, I know my car!!!!!

Now I take Stewart Ave. back to Lakeville Road and am stuck in all sorts of traffic and the damN 'check gages' light and battery light are blinking, so I have to keep putting the car in neutral and rev the engine and pray the whole way to God to get me to the dr w/o stalling!!!

I get to the dr, walk in and NOBODY WAS WAITING!! The dr was actually waiting for me!!! The only good thing to happen so far!! And the second best thing was that I didn't gain any weight!!!

Now the bad news -- I'm being put on insulin at night because my levels aren't going down in the morning. It's nothing I'm doing, it's the hormones and I'll have to inject myself up until the baby is born! Six weeks post-partum I have to go for another 2 hour glucose test and make sure everything goes back to normal by then.

I finally make it home (another traffic jam w/me playing auto mechanic) and walk in with the syringes and insulin and Joe FREAKS OUT!! You don't need that, let's get a second opinion, etc. I'm calmly trying to tell him that I do and it's only at night, blah blah blah. How's this for a switch? I'm comforting HIM!!!! Who's comforting me???

Now he starts talking to the Bear Cub -- what are you doing to Mommy??? Stop it!!!

So now I have to go back to the diabetic nurse tomorrow and learn how to shoot up!!!

Another day in my life!!!

2 words... ONLY YOU!

I'm sorry Deb, but it's time for a new car. When you go out to get the parts for your laptop this weekend (which better be numero uno on you 'to do' list), swing by a few car dealerships too. It's time to put your Old Faithful car to rest, before it kills you, or drives you certifiably insane.

That stinks about the insulin, but you know it's for your health and the cubs, so of course it's WORTH IT.
Luckily it's just for a VERY short time!

How is it possible to feel terrible for someone and be cracking up at the same time? Just read 'A Day in the Life of Debbie' I swear, you should write a book! LOL!!

and Aw! I'm sorry about the hassles and worse - the insulin shots. I really feel for you with the blood sugar problems. I never had any of that so I cant imagine what it must be like. Hang in there.

I know only me!!! And I know you're right, but my baby (the car that is) is still in excellent condition -- nobody believes it's that old!! I'll just get my battery fixed and Joe can use it to travel back and forth. We were going to look after the baby is born, but we have to think about doing it a lot sooner!!! Another thing to add to my ever-growing list of stuff to do before Baby Bear Cub!!

As for the insulin, I know it's just for a short while and for the Cub and all, but it's just annoying that the last several weeks are filled with all this!!! I just want to coast the next couple of weeks, you know?? OH well!!! I'll be fine, I hope Joe survives!!!

I am so sorry that you had to go through all that!!
I have a car from hell and know what praying and reving the engine and hoping the car doesn't stall. Especially since you are pregnant...you poor thing. I am so sorry about your sugar also. I was an RN (switched to become a brokerage trading assistant) and hopefully after your baby is born your sugar will go back to normal and you will be just fine. Hugs to you!!

I'm so sorry that you have to go through all of this.

WHAT A TROOPER! I felt so bad for you and at the same time I am giggling like an idiot at your post.

Deb - it's true - I soooo feel for you, yet you have me giggling over here! This will all soon be over...it really is almost over. It's just a shame you have to have all of this right at the end. Keep focusing on the bear cub -- once that beautiful baby is out here with you, you'll forget everything!!

Re: My day from heLL that ended with the word 'INSULIN' :( (long)

Thanks!! I'm glad I'm making you all laugh! I swear, a video camera should follow me around sometimes!

As for my car, aside from the fact that the a/c went kaput, I really have no other complaints. I bought it brand spanking new back in 1989 and it's always been there for me!! Personally, I think it's mad at me because I've been neglecting her since I got married!! She used to be garage kept, and since I moved to Maspeth, the poor thing has been broken into and had the mirror almost ripped off!! It's in shock being parked on the street!!! And I haven't kept on the cleaning like I used to!! This is her way to rebel!

You should've heard me talking to the car, God and the baby!!! It was quite comical!!!! I'm petting the dashboard like a baby, and it WORKED!!!

Can you imagine the story I'm going to have the day I go into labor????

YEsterday was a nightmare with all the traffic lights being shot because of the weather! Joe is too funny!

and Im sure everything will be fine !!!!!

Is there ANY way you can switch cars with your husband? honestly, you cannot get stuck in the rain on a busy parkway.

And I feel bad for laughing at your story- but the wet shoes is funny

Michele, his cars (both of them) are stickshifts and I don't know how to drive a stick!!

As for the shoes, my advice is don't wear sandals when it rains!!!!

Jennbaby, happy to oblige!!

to you all for making me smile!!!

Debbie, I love when I see stories from you. No matter what the situation, you turn it around and are able to laugh at it. You have such a great way about you.

I am sure you and the cub will be fine, I think it's Joe you need to worry about..

Oh, Deb Liz took the words out of my mouth...I cannot believe I'm laughing at such a sad story!

I'm sorry about the insulin, but you are strong and you'll be okay with it...now Joe, well I'm not so sure about him

PLEASE, if you can...fix the car or give it a pension before the baby comes. Obviously, it is not safe for you...and it will be twice as unsafe once the baby is in the back seat w/you.

Oh Deb I'm so sorry about the insulin So far I don't have to take it. BUT the friggin' insurance company won't let me get a glucometer until my Dr. calls them up and tells them I need one and then they send me one Hello I have no idea if I am managing my sugars the right way, and could be causing my son to be Andre' the Giant So I still haven't tested myself yet!!

I agree with the other girls get yourself a newer car!!!!! You deserve it
