My DH wants Casey to stay outside during the day....

and I am NOT happy about it. He wants her to stay in the (fenced) yard all day while we are at work. He wants to buy her a dog house and maybe tie her on a long rope to keep her in the yard. She is currently crated all day and has tons of energy so he feels bad and thinks this will be better for her.

What do you guys think? I would be a nervous wreck all day. She could get out...someone could take her.....it could pour rain...she could get too hot....anything could happen!

No way never ... what if she got out? Or someone came in your yard and stole her?

i personally am one of those people that are against leaving a dog outside all day.

since she is bigger now, instead of crating her all day maybe she can be secluded to one room rather than a crate or outside?

theres too much that can happen outside.

This is can happen. There are crazy people out there that will steal dogs for animal research or bait dogs for dog fighting. Please keep her inside, even if it means keeping her in a crate. At least she will be safe.

chaining a dog up outside just makes it angry, resentful, and aggressive. I am against it. Casey is still a puppy and will mellow out over time.

I understand how he thinks it is cruel to keep your pup caged, but it is much better than being outside all day. JMHO

I don't mean to upset anyone, but I have a sad story concerning this. Before I was born, my parents didn't have a fence, and just had their dog on a runner. Well, someone stole the dog from our yard and poisoned it, and left it back on their doorstep after it died. My mom says it was the only time she ever saw my dad cry. So there are sick people out there, and I wouldn't take any chances even if your yard is fenced in.

you can't do that to the dog.. it's mean.

You're going to have to train it... can you leave it in the basement? I would never confine my dog all day. When we are at home Molly has free reign of the house- you are both gonna have to put in a lot of work to train Casey and get her to the point where you can trust her... you can try it an hour at a time and try and puppy proof areas... but you can make her stay outside 8 + hours a day.

Someone stole my doggie when I was 8. y mom left him outside for 15 min, just to run to Dairy Barn to get milk, and when we got home the back gate was open and his rope was cut!!!! Please don't leave the doggie outside!!!!!!!

no. i have heard of stories where strays have attacked dogs in their yards.

Thanks guys - I may print this to show my DH. I won't let it happen. I understand why - he feels bad that she is crated all day but she means too much to both of us to let her stay outside. I have a feeling this is going to cause problems between my DH and I

FYI a friend of mine used to do that with his dog and one of his neighbors poisoned the dog because of the little guy kept barking.

We have a dog Casey too- she is older (6) and very very mellow. Our yard is fenced and we are going to be building her a doggie door. She has free reign of the house - but during the day while we are at work she will have the option of going in the back yard....i think she will end up still just sleeping in the house except when she has to pee...she is pretty lazy!

I agree with all the other posts. Your girl is still a puppy and just has all that puppy energy still! Leaving dogs outside unattended is the worst thing you could do - even for adult dogs. Puppies could get something in thier mouths and choke, dig thier way out - or even worse, get tangled if chained.. It's also a risk bc of all the sick people out there, and who knows what kinda of animals pass through your yard, despite the fence? We have a cat that still comes into the yard even with our fence, and we have no idea where it comes from or if it's sick or not.... Please do not do this - your dog is much safer in her crate during the day and it's the best place for her.

Not included in all of the valid points above is the fact you'll be constantly grooming her to rid her of fleas and ticks. Not just that, but the chances of heartworm is greater in outside dogs.

Also, there is a chance that the puppy could be attacked by other animals.

I know it is tough when they are puppies (my beagle was nuts when she was young), but they do eventually calm down. We keep our dog in the kitchen during the day, otherwise she'd be into everything. Once we get home from work, she runs around the house for about 10 minutes, and then calms down again.

I thought about a doggie door too, for when she is a little older...I cant leave her in the kitchen alone just yet bc she still chews things.....

but, question: She is a Golden Retriever and about 65 lbs. This may sound dumb, but the door would have to be BIG for her to get out...can't a full grown person (aka robber) crawl in?

good question about the robber! I never thought about that- as crazy as that sounds.....well, I guess the robber would have to scale our fence and then get in the doggie door- Casey is 75 lbs but i've seen how big the door is- it's smaller than i thought- a small man might fit...at night we would keep it locked- we were more afraid of opossums!
