My DJ just screwed me!

Original post by NatalieS

To make a long story short....

One month to the wedding and my DJ contacts my bridesmaid (they are friends) to ask her to ask me if my reception hall requires DJ insurance. Turns out they do, and he doesnt have any. Doesnt seem like he wants to shell out the money for it. This boils my blood to no end.

Can you believe the nerve. If as I didnt already have enought to worry about.

Whats the chances of me finding another dj within the next 30 days.

Re: My DJ just screwed me!

Ill be honest with you. I actually DJ on the side and ive still done my fair share of weddings. I do mostly bar/club work though... i am the head DJ at Sutton Place in Manhattan (been there almost four years) which is great cause anybody that was thinking about hiring me... I would just tell them the particular nights I was working there and to stop by and hear me play.

I don't have insurance. Ive been DJing for eleven years and I have NEVER needed it. I look at this as a side job more than anything else. That doesn't mean I am any less talented than the DJs you will find on all the companies that advertise here that charge $1200 and up for a gig. In fact I think I am pretty damm good. Plus as far as money goes... I've done weddings for much less. I just did a wedding last month up in Yale University.

I am sure he was probably giving you a significant discount on his rate... based on what you said about being a 'friend of a friend'. Would you mind if I asked what he charged. If he charged you over $1000... then he should of had insurance. Did he give you a contract? His contract should have said if he had insurance.

Knowing the fact that I am going to have to shell out buks for a DJ at my wedding next year absoultely PAINS me knowing I could probably do a better job if I did it myself. But hey.. what can you do. ;)

Good luck on finding a new DJ.

Insurance companies provide what they call 'special event insurance'. It just covers that particular date, and cost between $300-600. Sorry to hear that he's such a jerk.

Good info to know. I might have to inquire about this if people ask for it. Again... if that guy charged over $1000 for the event... he should have had it. I don't see why he can't just go out and get it to keep a client happy. Then again... if he was cheap (like $600 or something)... I can see why he wouldn't want to get it. His net profit for the day wouldn't be worth the work involved.

The thing that sucks the most about this is the original poster's 30 day window now. I am sure once she tells any DJ she needs somebody in a 30 day window for a wedding... lets just say you probably won't be getting any discounts (unless you get lucky and find someone that just had a last-minute cancellation).

Good luck.

I think - if he wanted it - he could get it from here:

www.rvnuccio.com

for $250.

You can also try www.gigmasters.com - you can email a lot of people quickly that way.

Good luck!
