my e-ring is too big! What to do?

Original post by FutureMcBride

So when FH proposed, he thought he got the right size, since he took one of my other rings with him when he bought it. I don't know what happened, but I needed a size 8 and the ring is a 9 1/4!

I went to a jeweler near my parents' house (they have been using him for years), and they told me that I should definitely get it resized since it has to go down a lot. He wouldn't do it though, he said that we should take it back to where we got it from and they would probably send it back to the vendor to resize it (since they will take gold out, the prongs could become loose). He gave me a ring guard which is working for now but I don't want to leave this on forever.

We are kind of hesitant to get it resized because I don't want to be without it for so long, AND my sister had to do the same thing and when the jeweler sent it out, they lost it! I don't want that to happen. ALso, my fingers are smaller now that it's winter and I know that they will be bigger in the summer and prob as I get older too, so should I keep it the way it is and use the ring guard and when I need to I can take it out?

Anyone experience this? Does anyone wear their ring with a ring guard??

TIA!

My e-ring was 1.5 sizes too large, so I got it re-sized pretty much right away. I could have sent it back, but opted to go to a reputable jeweler in the area (Ecolin-Port Jefferson), they did it while I waited and did an outstanding job. They checked the integrity of the prongs/structure after they re-sized. I highly recommend them.

FH got me ring resized on his lunch break where he bought it (an independent/custom jeweler) for free. And they polished it!

Thanks so much ladies for all of your help! I am just so confused because everyone I talk to says something different!!! I called the place where he got it, and it turns out that they do it right there and it takes 45 minutes, so I was happy to go with that, but I called another jeweler that is pretty reputable, and he told me that they do the work there, but that it will take a few days. He also said that it should take way longer than 45 minutes to resize it and do a good job!!! arghh I don't know how true this is, or if he just wants the business..... especially since so many of you ladies are telling me that they can do it while you wait! I think I need to talk to FH and see what he wants to do, since he is going to be paying for it lol.

Thanks so much again for your help and suggestions, I will let you know what happens!

I suggest taking it back to where you got it. FH bought my ring on BlueNile.com and it was a size too big. I had to ship it back to them for the resizing. I was w/o it for a week but I'm sooooo glad now that I had them do it rather than another jeweler.

i have seen rings take 30 minutes to size... honestly it all depends on how dirty the ing is. that what takes the longest and if they are a good jeweler it shouldnt take that long!

I'd take it to where he got it from to get it done. Mine had to go from a 7 to a 5.75 and I had to bring it in and it took 3 days and they mailed it back to me. I wore it with a ring guard the first month or so, then had it resized. I'm glad I did because it's just perfect now! Still a little tighter in the summer and looser in the winter, but not to the point that it'll slip off my finger.

Find out if your FH took out insurance on your ring. If so, you may have to get it resized where he bought it in order for the insurance to not be void. Just a consideration.

I know it stinks to be without your ring for a few days, but it's worth it in the long run. If the jeweler says they do it in an hour, that's great, and you can do that too. The original store knows best.

I agree that the actual sizing takes 30-60 minutes, but the total time can be delayed if the person who does it only comes in one day per week, or if they are backed up with other work. I got my ring sized in about 45-50 minutes, but I called ahead and made sure that I went at a time when I could wait for them to do it.

I would also recommend Gennaro in Bellmore. The ring never left my sight!!! They did an amazing job sizing it and they appraised it the same time as well. Just the experience there is great and interesting.

Re: my e-ring is too big! What to do?

i have several rings that i wear with a ring guard but NOT my e-ring! i'm comfortable with the other rings because i can either wear it on my ring finger (with the guard) or the middle finger without it.

imo, since it's an ER we're talking about, i highly suggest getting it resized because ERs cost a lot and means a lot! provided that the ring guard does it's job, you can never tell when it slips off and (mother-of-all-nightmares) you lose the ring! i know one bride who lost her ring because it slipped (to this day i still can't figure out how she didn't feel it slip off..)

as for your sister's lost-ring-case, just make sure you have the paperwork and that the company/jeweler who will resize has it in writing what they will do in the event that they lose the ring.

resize it or get these 2 balls put in to keep it tighter around your finger!

I would def go for it and get it resized.

I had to hand my ring back for WELL over a month for a custom wedding band to be made. Though it does stink to have to be without your ring for sometime.... it's giving up that little bit of time to have a ring that fits you properly forever (hopefully) and it's safer to have a ring that fits you.

Def get it resized.

Mine was too big too. I was told if they re-size it the stones will fall out, but they re-sized it anyway, so far so good, no stones has fallen out yet.

i would get it appraised and insured FIRST then get it resized... that way if god forbid something happens, youre covered..
good luck!

I got the balls put in for about 6 months and eventually gave in a and resized - resizing feels so much better. You don't feel the balls at first but leave the little dents in your finger after long periods.

I took it to a different jeweler - and he did it for 20 dollars - in under an hour. He checked all the prongs to tighten any that were lose. He also explained that a lot of jewelers do not want to do this and ask that you take it back to the original jeweler because the stones on the band DO get loose and need to be checked.

I would rather pay someone else to do it on the spot than to give it in for a week. But if you must, then I agree with someone before me - insure it first.
