My fellow Unemployed.. how are ya?

So whatcha doing and how's it going?
Anyone want to walk me through how to apply for unemployement so I am prepared in May?

I've been unemployed since April 4th

As of today I have three promising leads with my resume. I'm signing up with career builder and Monster today and calling one more headhunter. Then I have errands I need to run.

Business: Insurance
Previous Job: Marsh USA International Casualty Specialist for Fortune 500 companies liability exposures overseas.

Ideal Job: Something in Long Island, hopefully Melville.

Will accept: $3,000 less in previous salary to stay on the Island but would accept at least the same salary to got to the City.

Goals: 5 or more face-to-face interviews by the end of the month.

I've been unemployed since Jan 1st with no promising leads.

Even though I worked on LI, I expect any new job would be around a $20-30K pay cut to stay on LI. I won't apply for anything in NYC.

Motivational, huh?

I took that much of a pay cut when making the move to work on LI. I found places here didn't pay nearly as much (even with the same company, same field, though I did switch fields). I am happier now though (though with less $!). Good luck!

My problem is I worked for a large corporation (so relatively high salaries) that I was with for ten years (I nearly tripled my salary from when I started) and NYC/LI was considered regionally the same as far as pay scales.

JESUS!

If I took a 20k-30k cut I'd be making minimum wage!!

I think it is just that there are so many people willing to take less to work on Long Island--Computer Associates pays hardly anything, and yet there are so many people who would love to work there (their benefits are very good, but salary we are talking highway robbery).

Oh great, I applied for a bunch of jobs there!! So now we're talking an even bigger pay cut??

Re: My fellow Unemployed.. how are ya?

Fellow Unemployed here! Have had two placement agency interviews and one real company interview since I was laid off a month ago. Have been sending follow-ups but not hearing anything. Have even received help from fellow LIW's in my industry (book publishing) but nothing is happening. Salary isn't much of a consideration right now since I know what I should expect in publishing. Just need to get them to call me and want to meet me. Just need to get my foot in the door, so to speak.

So far today I have followed up on a few resumes, followed up with my headhunter (the one I like, who I think can help me) and made my bed I think I should get dressed soon too. That will help me feel more productive.

LOL my friends there were making in the $20s! After having gotten MBAs (though CA did pay for the MBAs...).
ETA: Actually 3 of my friends got laid off fairly recently from CA.

The $20s! I don't know HOW they expect people to live! But I think they have free daycare, so a lot of people work there to take advantage of that. And they give free pet insurance.

I left Texas I was making $29,5K and that was GOOD money there.

I can't imagine surviving on $20k here!

Re: My fellow Unemployed.. how are ya?

Just so I stay 'routine' I am up with Jim every morning.

Dressed (ok Jeans, but still dressed) and out the door before 8:30 and take him to work (even though we do have two cars).

I makes me feel productive.

When I get home the living room becomes my office. I have an office but the desk has no space for anything other than the computer. So I'm in the living room with the laptop and my notebook.

I keep a going list of names and numbers I haved called, companies that show interest and companies I have interest in.

Headhunters I've called and headhunters who at least call back. I have a headhunter interview tomorrow and a interview in the City on Friday.

I have to say I'm proud of how much I've done on just my 2nd day of unemployement but I'm TERRIFIED what is going to happen when I run out of leads and nothing develops. Also I HATE rejection (who doesnt?) and interviews mean rejections.

Re: My fellow Unemployed.. how are ya?

I was so on the ball when I first got laid off. I sent so many resumes. Now I feel like I have sent in for all of my major leads and now I am praying for a job.

Hmmm, maybe that is what I need to do. Go to church and pray for a good job. Or just pray to St. Jude. since I feel like a hopeless case.
