I just found this out tonight. It's not that she HAS to take this cruise at this time...she could go one week later (they're retired and travel ALL THE TIME).
FI wasn't surprised, he said his mother and step-father have always been the most selfish people on the face of the earth.
FI never received a dime or any help from them, not even emotional encouragement when he decided to become a veternarian. They told him he was stupid for doing it...now that he's a success...they take all the credit and constantly tell their friends that their son is a Dr.
She makes me sick. I guess it's because my parents are so giving. FI has always said that my own parents treat him better and give him more than his. Oh well.

She is going to make herself look like an ass, because people are going to ask where she is and when they find out she went on a cruise instead of being there, she will get herself talked about. Im so sorry you have to deal with FIL's like this..You are going to have a beautiful shower anyway, you dont need her crap. Besides, she would probably make a scene or something at your shower anyway tp get attention!

This sounds like something my FMIL would do. Especially take credit for my FI success. I have recently decided that there is too much fun to be had in this wedding planning that I can't let her bother me. Just keep enjoying being engaged and know that the people who love you will be at your shower. And people will make their own conclusions when she is not there. She will look like the bad one and be missing out on this great time.
