MY fmil on weddings...

My fmil told me tonight
' Weddings were not this complicated when I got married!'
I walked to the church in the dress my mom made me with the flowers from her garden she tied together, walked to the church, got married, walked to a resturant with my husband and the whole village behind us and ate and had a good time! PERIOD! '

Well jeez when did she get married the 20's in some small town? Only kidding. I guess some people need to get with the times.

Ugh, I can totally sympathize w/ you. My FMIL keeps telling me how she had this amazing band and reception in New York City for a total of $2000 for her entire wedding and she and FFIL paid for the whole thing themselves.

I just clench my teeth and say, 'Wow, I guess times have changed'.

My mom keeps telling me that sort of stuff. 'I don't remember doing THIS when I got married. I didn't have a shower. I didn't have a limo. I didn't do hair trials...' etc.

Re: MY fmil on weddings...

It really is odd for older people to imaging spending so much $ on a wedding today. Speaking for myself, when I was married 32 yrs ago, I paid $17.50 a head at my hall. But, I was earning about $6,000 a year & my FI was making only a little more. Everything is relative, but your parents will tend to forget that. When your kids are getting married some day in the future, I bet you'll be shocked at the cost.

Uggh, parents, they just don't get it. These are different times. Things aren't as simple as they were back then, although I wish they were!

Sounds just like that scene out of The Godfather where Michael marries Abolonia in Italy....the whole family followed them on their first date too. Totally OLD school!

Re: MY fmil on weddings...

My father is the exact same way. Both my parents were from small towns in Italy and had a very similar wedding to what you described. He can't even believe things were booked 2 years in advance when we started looking and all the work that is involved!

My FMIL says the same thing. When my FI tells her what we are doing for certain things or how much things are, she says 'I did not do that when I got married. I did not pay that much for that'. She needs to understand that is now 2004 not the 1960's when my FILs got married.

Re: MY fmil on weddings...

my parents got maried on LI in 1970 , so It think although it cost less than mine in actuall, $, it awas probabaly pretty close in proprtion to cost of living & salries at that time.

I think their's was actually a bigger producution. My mom has a binch of cousins on li that were all getting married around the same time & my grandma had to make sure things were done properly, so ' the family won't talk'

I get that ocasionally. . especailly regarding the favors. . .

I kinda like the small town in italy version. . .

Re: MY fmil on weddings...

I only WISH things were more simple. IMO we spend way too much time, money, and energy on everything. In the tri state area, the wedding situation has gotten out of control. I have friends all over who don't do half the stuff we do. It's nuts. I am keeping my reception small, intimate and will not go over board just because that's the way it's done. I work in a nursing home and my residents (who were all still married after 50+ years) cannot believe what we do. They say we're all missing the message of the union of marriage because we get caught up in rediculous details. I really appreciate the older people I deal with beacuse they help me put things into perspective.

Re: MY fmil on weddings...

i wish i could have it that way...

the commercialization of weddings these days make me sick. i'm a bit of a hypocrite because i have been sucked in, however i feel as though i have NO CHOICE! had my parents not sold their last house we would have had the reception there...it would have made things just that much more special...

It's all relative.... and inflation.

Back then if a wedding cost $2000, so did your average car.

It's about the same now. JMO.

I guess it has gotten a little out of hand compared to those days but times change and I really dont know if I could ever get married nowadays without my hair and makeup done professionally. (Im not being snotty, I just have no hair and make sense)

Re: MY fmil on weddings...

Well ask her if she'd like to tie you some flowers from her garden and walk with you to church and have all her guest walk to the recption after. that is how i would handle it.
