I totally understand her being upset. IMO the love is what counts the most however, getting a nice ring really shows how much you mean to him. Anyone can say 'oh i love you and want to marry you' but, when he goes out and spends thousands on a ring... you know he really means it. (unless of course he is a millionaire and doesn't care about $) lol

I can understand if he told her first and promised her a real diamond when he could afford it but, to buy a fake ring and let her believe its real... thats just wrong.

yeah but what about guys who would LOVE to spend alot on an e-ring but they just really can't afford it. I mean alot of these guys are still in school, paying off school loans, just starting out at their jobs and working their way up. I mean you can't expect a guy to spend ALOT of money on a ring if they just can't. I don't think thats how you show someone...i know girls who have HUGE rocks and their fh's husbands cheat, aren't the greatest guys in the world, or they end up getting divorced or calling it off, the only thing is he had money and it didnt really effect him to spend alot on a ring bc he has it. And i know guys who love their SO with all their hearts and would do anything for them and treat them like queens but they couldn't spend a fortune on a ring. And to expect a guy to pay alot when you know he doesn't have it is wrong

I have to agree -I'd be mad if FH didn't explain to me in the beginning that it was a CZ.

FH gave me a 'promise ring' that has rubies (both our birthstone) and diamonds in it. He explained that it was a promise that when he had the available $$ he'd buy me a real engagement ring and propose properly but in the meantime he wanted me to have something to show to all that he is mine and I am his.

I'd really be mad if I found out that it was a CZ (I know mine isn't for sure..lol) but yes FH should have told her that it was a CZ.

Re: My friend got a 'fake' ring!

should of been told upfront! I am not one prissy gal who needs the biggest diamond and most obnoxious setting but i would want to know if it was real or not. I am one for honestly and not feeling like ignorance is bliss. I want to know and i would of been still happy with a fake ring as long as its all he could swing at the time and told me upfront.

BUT.....

If he is spending cash elsewhere and can't afford to wait a few months to save up on a ring and not go on a vacation or buy tons of crap then don't get engaged - RUN away from him. Why? Because he is only going to get worse as time goes on.

Re: My friend got a 'fake' ring!

well sounds like everyone summed it up,

But:

Maybe she's reacting this way out of embarassement and is taking it out on her fh.

She needs to get over it..as many have said on here, it's a ring!! Yes it's symbolic, but don't lose sight, the ring will not save your relationship or set a good foundation.

wow, that's hard. you're in a sticky situation. i'm 100% with you.

i guess remind her the meaning of engagement. remind her that she can have a better ring later on when they are financially stable, if that is really what she wanted.

if she still insists, ask her if she can imagine her future without this guy.

hugs for you, girl!

Yes, he should have told her at the beginning, but she is acting very spoiled. It doesn't matter what kind of diamond the ring has. If she wanted a real diamond, then maybe she should have paid for it herself. Sorry, just makes me mad when some girls expect these expensive rings .... thinking that the real diamond shows how much they are loved. Why does it matter if the ring is real or not? Seriously.......why?

I totally agree. This girl sounds really shallow & materialistic. I mean I can totally see her being upset that he led her to believe it was a real diamond when it's not. I'd be mad about being lied to and I'd have a good long talk with him about the trust issues and want to know why he didn't feel that he could be open with me about it from the beginning. But, to demand a real ring now or she'll call of the wedding is ridiculous of her... who cares what kind of ring it is? Who cares if it's 'real' or not? (obviously it looked real enough if she couldn't tell from the beginning!) If the commitment & love & desire to get married is there that's all that matters.

I would have no problem with it if FH got me a fake ring, as long as he told me first the situation. But the fact that he lied and tried to hide it from me would upset me a lot... it would make me wonder if he would be honest with me all the time, and if there was a communication issue between us since he didn't feel comfortable coming to me with his problems.

Re: My friend got a 'fake' ring!

im living proof that a ring does not matter at all in order to get married..its just old tradition and it doesnt matter if its real or not..

the whole thing calling it 'fake' is what gets me

CZ is not fake..its just not diamond..its still a stone that if you want to get really nice ones..they alone can be quite pricey..just because they are clear like diamonds and less expensive..they are considered fake

CZ are made to look like a perfect colorless diamond and if you rinse it under water everyday for like 5 seconds..it will look like a diamond..

so stop calling the ring fake..its a real CZ which is a nice stone..its just not a diamond

a lot of people get the setting and put a CZ in it until they can afford a diamond and then get it insured

some people dont have like 6 or 7 thousand dollars to blow on a ring

A RING DOES NOT MEAN MARRIAGE..plan a wedding with out on..i did..lol

but i have on now and i love it

In her defense, he should've been honest with her from the beginning. But she is being totally selfish. IMO. It is not the size of the stone or any of that crap that really matters. He wants to spend his life with her and thats the important thing. I think she is overreacting.

Sorry but I have do disagree with you on that one. Its not how much money someone spends on you that says how MUCH they actually love you. You can buy someone everything in the world to BUY there love, but IMO that is not true love, if they feel they have to be bought.

My FH doesnt make a lot of money and I told him i didnt care if he got me a ring out of the quater machine to propose to me, as long as it was a ring that meant i was to be married to him. Okay, well something a lil nicer than a quarter machine ring, but you get my point. My FH did save all he can to get me a gorgeous ring, but if he didnt, i still wouldve said yes and be perfectly happy.

Re: My friend got a 'fake' ring!

that really suckss for your friend, i would feel decieved, i would hope that i knew my FH well enough to know that he couldnt afford to buy me a diamond. Did she not know his financial situation?

Having a ring does not mean you cant plan a wedding, I just wish that her FH would of been honest and open enough to tell her that they could plan their wedding, but she would have to wait til he saved up to get her a diamond, if that is what she really wanted.

And the thing about getting it appraised right away, i think that is normal, me and FH went to get the ring appraised together right after he gave it to me so we could insure it god forbid it was stolen or lost.

Re: My friend got a 'fake' ring!

I know a woman who did not get a ring, instead they planned an amazing European honeymoon and on their 25th anniversary she finally got a real engagment ring.

However, she was in on the plan not to get a real ring. I don't see anything wrong with a cz for a ring, I probably wouldn't be able to tell the diff so what's the point, but FH should have told her up front..... Its a bit deceiving that he tried to pull one over on her...

Wow- he definitely should have told her from the beginning. It would have saved a lot of problems. Hopefully she will clam down a bit after they have a heart to heart. It's definitely not the money that would wory me, but that he didn't teller in the first place. I hope everything works out.

exactly...on a cruise ship i got a cheap ring, CZ for 20 $ dont make fun...

when i came home with it...bc it was a beautiful ring..people at my job thought it was an ering...

it was GORGEOUS! i always got compliments on it. it was funny. haha

so that girl shouldnt worry bc if shes embarassed not everyone can tell. i dont kno...i didnt expect a ring when i got one bc didnt think FH could afford it...and he shocked me...but had to pay it off. i was mad he spent what he did.

Re: My friend got a 'fake' ring!

omg.. how awkward!

I dont know HER motives for being upset. If it were me I would be because I would feel like I was being decieved.. because there wasnt a disclaimer.. ' oh btw.. its not a real diamond'.. when I was gushing over it..
So for me it would be more of a trust thing.
heck.. I bought my own first engagment ring because I wanted something nice..LOL. But I have worn fake ones before to symbolize I was married..
( the original was lost) ..
