My friend is getting married a month before me and keeps stealing my ideas - help!

Original post by ETurner

Hey everyone!

So the story starts like this..... my friend has been engaged for 10 years. She finally set a date right before i got engaged - knowing i was getting engaged so its a little fishy from the start. Everything was fine - i am in her wedding party and she is in mine, and her finace is in ours and my fiance is in theirs - a couples thing i guess. You would think this would be a fun time - so did i, until she started stealing all our ideas.

First it started with they were going to have a DJ - then they found out we were having a band with a horns section. The following week - they booked a band with a horns section. Whatever, not a big deal.

Then the church. They were getting married at their reception hall, they found out this beautiful church we were looking at - the next week, they booked that church. That got under my skin a little more.

Next - brides maids colors. i told her we were having a deep red, she picked a rusty red. But we have since changed our colors so thats good.

Then what really got me heated was she found out the bridal shop i got my dress - went there and ASKED TO SEE MY DRESS! I wasnt even there!!! Thank god the bridal shop said no, they had a strict policy on that.

I ****** it up and just started to deal with it and my finace and i stopped telling them details. But then yesterday, i emailed the moms and all my bridesmaids just to give a quick introduction of who everyone is. Of course she was included in the email because shes a bridesmaid. That evening, i get a email from her donig the same thing for her bridesmaids - and get this, she used the SAME copy i put in my email!!! I told my girls thank you so much and it means the world to me they are all going to be a part of my wedding and we are going to have a fun year. She used the same words - same everything - even same subject line!!

Needless to say i lost it. I can not deal with her anymore and i do not want to spend my wedding year planning and getting ready with her stealing my every move. My finace and i should be having fun - not getting stressed out because we have to watch what we are saying around her.

HELP! What do i do? Do i tell her its just not going to work out and we shouldnt be in eachothers weddings? Im so confused and want to get this solved fast so we can move on and continue planning.

Thank you for taking the time to read my long post - venting can take a while ;)

Wow that would get to me too. Just stop telling her anything period. There is nothing else you can do. Oh I would reply to that email saying, 'Nice copy and paste!'

I agree with this. That is rude that she's taking all your ideas and even plagarising your email.

I had a similar situation and I just stopped telling this person my ideas.
She bought my wedding dress before I bought it. That was the last straw.
Then she had the nerve to tell me that she thought that 'any dress under 4k was made poorly.'
I said to her 'my friend got a dress at david's bridal and she looks beautiful. How dare you make a stupid comment like that.'

Stop telling her things OR tell her the opposite and see what she does. heee heee heeee

Now thats crazy - i cant believe she bought your dress before you! Theres a lot of beautiful dresses out there for under 4K. Some look even way better than the 6K dress!!

I'm so sorry that you are going through this. It is rough to have all these great ideas and then have someone use them as their own. I would be pretty P-Oed too if someone started to take all my ideas and use them. I think when it comes down to it, she's probably an insecure person and is jealous of you and FH. Otherwise, why would be make it a point to try to top you.

People have told me its a form of flattery too - but its so frustrating to me i can't see it that way.

Asking her to not be apart of the wedding party can be tough though since your FH and her FH are friends... it might end up affecting your relationship after both of you have gotten married. I would just let the other BMs know the deal and keep on doing what you are doing. Don't let her ruin your day!

My FH is scared of that exact thing - maybe i will just talk to the other BMs and let them know the scoop and to not tell her to much more than what she really needs to know

Hey hun - May I be completely honest with you -

Think about it for a minute - you are friends right? And friends usually like the same things and compliment eachother.

When it comes to a wedding - you have to remember that as a bride - just because you do something, doesnt mean that she cant.

Yes, it stinks. It really does. But what can you do about it. Seriously - I dont mean to come down as harsh - but you need to think realisticly about this. Your weddings are NOT going to be the same. Same vendors or venues yea maybe - but i promise you they will be completely different!!

Friends need to support eachother - and there is alot to lose here. I regret losing friends throughout this process....and its not worth it. Not in the least. Theres a lot more to a wedding then vendors and churches and halls...and I really think you need to be mature about this and move past it. She is going to do whatever she wants - as she should she is getting married an is entitled to everything the rest of us have. Just as You are too!!!

Theres alot of stress and things coming at you from all directions right now. Take a step back, a deepbreath, and resume planning your biggest day and stop worrying about hers!

CHalk it up to good taste and flattery - but you cant stop someone from doing things, as much as it may stink. But really just relax - and let this blow over. THere are going to be many more things that as the day approaches that are going to rightfully stress you out - and need your attention. Just focus on the day you dreamed of.

I totally appreciate your honesty and being a tad harsh - but thats the reality and thats what i need help with.

Given yes - there are hundreds of Brides some with maybe similar ideas - but when its your 'close' friend, it puts a whole new spin on things. By no means would i tell her what she can and cant do - i just want to make her realize how her actions are affecting me and making me feel without totally messing up the next year.

Im sure there will be MANY more things that need my attention more than her drama - and i would love to focus 100% on my wedding. All why im trying to figure this out now while its still early.

Or you could be sneaky too and give her crappy ideas and try to pass them off as awesome and pretend you're doing them lol

I can see why you are frustrated. You must be good friends with her because she is in your bridal party.

I think you should have a heart to heart with her and tell her your frustrations and why.

I would extend an offer of help in planning her wedding, to help steer her in her own diretcion. maybe she doesn't have any solid ideas and she is taking leads from you.

This can be handled without ruining your friendship. Have an open mind and best of luck.

Overall - Thank you everyone for your posts - it has helped me A LOT. I think, for the sake of my FH and his relationship with her FH, i will talk with her. Tell her im hurt and tell her she went out of line.

Shes not normally the type to be sympathetic - and she tends to turn things around on you like your the *** hole - but its worth a shot.

If things dont work after the talk - ill probably end up back here with what to do next.

Thanxs again girls and good luck with your weddings!!

Here's to not dealing with 'One-Uppers' for the rest of the year

Yes by all means talk to her!!! I would just hate tho for you to go nuts - when nothing is going to change, because odds are she wont - but hey this dog eat dog world eats us all sometimes.

If its carbon copying things down to details, yes - bc thats not fair at all - but it doesnt seem thats all it. If that is the case - shes probably freaking out - i dont think its competitiveness - rather - shes hitting a point where she is shitttting and getting off the pot and feels ashamed that shes gone so long and now people are getting married and life is just going by...

But if its one minor thing or 2 - let it go - and be happy and enjoy your planning - bc u will look back on this one day - make it happy memories!

after 2 years of planning - i promised myself to be only be realistic.

And you are entitled to be hurt -

Hey - you have GREAT taste!

i wouldn't tell her anything in regards to planning. and maybe even tell her if she needed your help planning she could have just asked. she doesn't seem like a true friend at all...i dunno that i'd want such a jealous envious person in my wedding party

That's a great idea. In my opinion, I would just call her on it. I don't think you can go back and react to anything in the past, but the next thing she does that you are doing, stop her right in her tracks. If she describes a cake she's getting that's identical to yours, just fire back, 'I don't think so ______, u know that's my cake, GET YOUR OWN!' and then laugh it off with her. Sort of like honest humor, look her in the face and say get your own ideas woman!!!!!!!! I think if you do it in a humorous way she should get the hint.

If she doesn't get the hint then you'll have to just sit her down and tell her. If you don't, you'll find yourself despising her. GOOD LUCK!

Oh boy ! Flattery is one thing but duplicating everything is not right. I agree stop telling her things - maybe speak with your maid of honor and the other girls if you can about this and ask themto not share information except on a need to know basis.

Oh maybe you can just say something to her like listen I know we are both getting married close to each other but maybe it is best if we keep the planning to ourselves only involving each other when you have to include her for something bridesmaid related? No sure this is tough! My best friend decided to get married the week after me, when she got engaged and now we are both planning our wedding at the same time, she is in my wedding but she is not having a bridal party, so far things have worked out ok. We might have the same flower color but I don't care i picked mine first and am not chaning...and we are having totally different weddings. At first I was upset but there is nothing you can do. Your situation is a lot more extreme!! I would be rightfuly upset!

honestly- the dress thing was crossing a line but she obviously values your opinion so be flattered but be on your guard! Don't share any more ideas...

It is called bridal identity theft.you must keep some of your details to yourself for now. In addition you have to talk to her.jmo.

Re: My friend is getting married a month before me and keeps stealing my ideas - help!

Well - that went over like a fart in church. Like i guessed, she spun it all around on me.

I started telling her how i felt and she blew up on me. Telling me 'how dare my FH and i plan our wedding right after theirs' and how selfish we are for doing so and she said 'we have been planning this for 10 years ,and now that we finally have our date people keep getting engaged and we cant plan anything'

I told her for her on sake dont give a s*it what other people are doing, plan your wedding when you want it. I said to her 'no offense, but my FH and i are well aware of when you are getting married, and we dont care. we are going to plan our wedding when we want. not when its convenient to everyone else.' I honestly think thats the way you need to look at it - if you keep planing it around other people getting married you'll never set a date.

Then she claimed she that when she asked to see my dress she laughed and said to the bridal shop girls 'of course i dont want to see it, im just joking.' That i know is not the truth because the bridal shop told me when i was in there last that she really asked to see it.

She pretty much made it all about her - made me the bad guy - didnt listen to any of my concerns or what i was saying and told me my FH and i were selfish for getting married after her because shes been waiting 10 years to get married I didnt raise my voice once and she was flying off the handle on me - crazy!

I told her since we were being honest, i was hurt that because she has been engaged for 10 years shes acting like she has seniority above myself and her brother getting married a month before her. (yeah - get that) She said 'im not acting like that, i just wish people would have consideration about our plans.' i said, yea, pretty much what i just said, your acting like you have seniority and everyone should wait to plan their wedding and parties until you have your dates set. I said thats not how it works.

Needless to say - once she cools off i am going to tell her i think it would be best if we aren't in each others wedding.

This really ***** and i think i need a couple glasses of wine after that, but im glad i got it out of the way now and not the day of my wedding! god that would be a mess!

My FH couldnt believe thats how she reacted and was pissed she called us selfish for planning out wedding. My FH also said her FH would be embarrassed if he knew what she said because he is not like that at all!

sigh...

So thank you SO much again everyone for your suggestions - this was a great therapy session - haha

Heres to getting married!!!
