My Gram Needs a prayer

My Gram Needs a prayer

My grandma just had a masectomy on Tuesday. They gave her morphine and she is not the same mentally. She literally is out of her mind. She doesn't trust any of the doctors and nurses. She thinks they are trying to poison her and she won't eat. It was so pathetic to see her sitting in the hallway all by herself because she is not a good patient.

Has anyone gone through this? Do you think it is permanent or do you think she will stay out of her mind? She is 84 and I hate to see her like this. It is killing me. My grandma has lived with me my whole life so this is just so upsetting and I can't stop crying.

To all the nurses and doctors on the board a big thank you to all of you. You truly are remarkable and incredible.

Thanks for listening...

My prayers are with you. I'm not to sure about the morphine reaction. Maybe the nurses on the board can give you some insight.

Re: My Gram Needs a prayer

I am really sorry to hear about your Gram.

dont get too worried yet about the personality disorder. Very often, after major surgery people (especially elderly) can be sortof out of it. It is said to be from the anesthesia. Most of the time they come out of it in a few days.
My grandma just went through this with a good friend of hers who had hip surgery. When she came out of it she thought she was at home, and was all out of sorts, and just not herself. After a day she was back to normal.

I hope your Gram recovers well, you will be in my thoughts.

First off let me send you some

About 2 years ago, my grandmother had a hip replacement and while she was recovering she went through the SAME thing.

She was seeing things in the hallways... She was ALWAYS mad at everyone!! Kirstie Alley was in the next room with a bunch of dogs (LOL, we laugh now) She didn't trust ANY of the nurses, she said they were having parties in the hallways and not caring when a patient died... it was VERY scary... we just let her speak. There were more, I can't remember. As she spoke we corrected her this way, these visions or thoughts wouldn't stay with her.

Don't worry about it... I'm sure your Grandma will be okay. I will pray for her!

Re: My Gram Needs a prayer

I had a surgery and found out the hard way that I was allergic to ALL MORPHINE DERIVATES! However, my reaction was insane itching (but no hives), being extremely hyper and acting out of my mind.

Ask her MD if it's possible that she may be having an allergic reaction. If not, maybe they should lower the dose of the morphine.

She's in my prayers!

Lots of hugs and prayers...

Iknow how you feel, I was very close to my grandmother and it really hurts to see them acting so different, and they dont even know it...
Be patient and understanding. Its tough, but just stick by her.. There are times it can get fustrating, just to beleive that this is the same person, and it even may seem like they are 'acting' this way...
I hope it is temporary in this case.. God knows they are not 'acting' and would want more than anything to be their 'old self'...

Lots of hugs sweetie.. God Bless your grandma!
