My Gram Needs a prayer

Original post by Jen_n_Dale

My grandma just had a masectomy on Tuesday. They gave her morphine and she is not the same mentally. She literally is out of her mind. She doesn't trust any of the doctors and nurses. She thinks they are trying to poison her and she won't eat. It was so pathetic to see her sitting in the hallway all by herself because she is not a good patient.

Has anyone gone through this? Do you think it is permanent or do you think she will stay out of her mind? She is 84 and I hate to see her like this. It is killing me. My grandma has lived with me my whole life so this is just so upsetting and I can't stop crying.

To all the nurses and doctors on the board a big thank you to all of you. You truly are remarkable and incredible.

Thanks for listening...

Re: My Gram Needs a prayer

Hi Jen-sorry I just saw your post tonight. I'm a nurse on a surgical floor and YES, grams reaction is definately a normal one for an elderly person especially after receiving any type of narcotic. I see it all the time-I've been hit and cussed at by patients who thought I was trying to kill them or hold them hostage-we've even had to go as far as to have security come up some nights and pretend they are cops to calm them down. There is nothing you can do but to let it run it's course and about 95% of the patients return to their normal selves-and don't even remeber how kooky they acted!!
BTW-what hospital is she at??
