Jen: Here are some hugs to help you along.

I agree that Grandma's are a special group of people. I only have one left so I understand. I cherish mine very much.

I'm so sorry---my grandma went through this exact surgery a year ago....she was really sick from the medicine but I don't recall personality problems-but everyone is different! Prayers and hugs to you and your gram!

I'm so sorry to hear about your grandmother Jen!! My father had the same reaction when he was given morphine after surgery -- he was in ICU, so it was a separate cubicle then the other patients and he thought we put him in a dungeon and the bats were coming at him! I asked the nurse right away and she said it was common for people to hallucinate from it!!

Praying for a speedy recovery for gram!

Re: My Gram Needs a prayer

I'm so sorry you are going thru this...Of course I will pray for your grandmother and your family...

My grandma had a chemical imbalance (completely different from what you're grandma is going through)...I saw her in and out of mental institutions for years, getting shock treatments, not talking when we would visit, not eating, examining small pieces of thread from her dress for hours...and then they were able to treat it with medication, and although not perfect, she was pretty much back to her old self.

There is a chance that your grandma could go back to the way she was...try and keep the faith!!
Big hugs!!!!!!!

Re: My Gram Needs a prayer

My great grandmother had it after her hip surgery. She was 90 and broke her right hip and 92 when she broker her left hip (she passed away 3 months shy of her 95th birthday). I too lived with her and it was very hard. They did the surgery and after the surgery while in recovery she would tell us she saw things that no one else saw.

When we got her at home she thought we were holding her against her will. We had to put the hospital bars on her bed because in the middle of the night she would get up and leave the house and ring the neighbors bell and tell them we were holding her hostage (thank god these were neighbors my mother grew up living next door too and they knew the situation), when we had the hospital bars put on the bed my mom put one of those baby monitors in her room so she could hear her if their were problems and she leaned over and grabbed the monitor and was talking into it like it was a police radio. She would say stuff like 'i am located here, do you hear me, over'

When we told the doctors about her actions he told us its a normal reaction and we have to treat her like we would normally treat her, she will snap out of it.

She did, but it wound up becoming a lot harder to take care of her because she had dementia and her needs were getting to a point where we couldnt do it. So we had to put her in a nursing home.

You ladies are awesome. Thank you so much for all your support, hugs and prayers. She is still in the same mental state but at least you have all given me some hope. You really are a fantastic group. I really can't thank you all enough.
