My guest list is kind of high... how did you handle single friends and 'guests'?

I feel bad not inviting people with guests, but we are WAY over on our guest list!

What are you doing/did you do? Did you openly invite people 'with guest'. Did you wait for them to ask if they could bring someone? Did you only invite guests if you knew them well?

Im hoping a lot of people will say they cant come. They say its like 20% that say no...and then Im still over!

me, too... that's why I'm wondering about single friends and whether I should invite them with guests if they're not seeing anyone?

My experience was that the women I invited 'with guest' who didn't have a boyfriend RSVPed just themselves, the men who weren't dating anyone all rsvped 2.

I called the guys (there were 3) to see who they were bringing so that I could do the placecards and they all said 'I don't know yet'

My advice is to not assume that 20% of your guests will say no.... Out of 170 people invited, only 13 said no....That is less than 10%!!!!!

That's why I'm thinking of just inviting everyone alone, and then if they approach me later asking me to bring someone, then we'll let them (assuming the guest list isn't out of control)

thats what we did...all the single people alone, and as the list dwindled down we told them they could bring a guest

When you invite a single person with a guest more often then not, the person will RSVP for two, then their date ends up as a no-show. I think it depends on your relationship with the person. If it's an adult who is uncomfortable going alone to things, then you kind of have to, but if it's someone who will know a lot of people, then dont' invite with a guest. Also, I asked a lot of my friends what they wanted to do. I let them know that they have the option, but do not need to feel obligated to bring someone just to have a date.

basically, all of the single people we were inviting were really close friends, or my close cousins... so we told them ahead of time ' look, our guest list is long, so we're gonna send the invite to just you. chances are, you'll be able to bring a date, but we just have to see what it looks like once we start getting RSVPS back'
and they were all fine with that. a month before the wedding, when we had all of the RSVPs back and i realized we still had room, i started calling the single people o see if they had somebody in mind to bring. i think maybe only one of them ended up bringing somebody, but at least we gave them the chance.

most of the people we're inviting are involved with someone seriously, if not married. so we're going to let the handful of single people we're inviting bring a guest if they want.

I am in the same dilemma. We are inviting all our single guests with no boyfriend/girlfriend alone, and anyone in a serious relationship with a guest. It was a really hard decision, but it is what is working best for us.

we decided that if they aren't in a serious relationship before our invites go out, then they can't get a guest. we already have too many people on our list and giving every single a plus one, would just be insane.

I'm so glad that you posted this. I was feeling really bad about it, but everyone is making me feel better!!

i'm another bride who invited single people alone.l

our rule was this: for us to invite an additional person, our original guest has to be engaged or living with their significan other.

i went so far as to put the number of seats we had 'reserved' in their 'honor'

even with this rule our guest list is TOO big. i keep praying for that MAGIC 20% to kick in. i have a feeling it's not going to. i only have 7 declines, so far

We're only inviting people with guests if we have met their guest and they have been together for more than 3 months or so (excpetions being for distant friends who I might not be able to see all the time)....if it's someone who they met in a bar two weeks ago, they don't need to be attending my wedding when I can have someone else I know well there instead!!

My friend who got married said once that an ettiquitte book said if they are in a relationship for 1 year or more they should be invited w/ guest. If not, no guest necessary.

Honestly, if they are not dating anyone seriously, they are being invited on their with no guest. most if my single friends are not being invited with a guest.... we have too many as it is. luckily, everyone will know somone at the wedding, so those invited without a guest will be placed at a table with someone they know.

honestly, i would cut out the guests....

It's not necessary if your guest list is too long BUT for older guest (define that as you might) I think it's a nice gesture. We invited everyone with a guest (since we were both 30 when we got married) and only one person took advantage of it (besides those who were married, in serious relationships I mean).

My FH and I are also experiencing this dilemma.

My MIL says we should invite singles with a guest because no one wants to go alone and have no one to dance with. She thinks it's just not nice or good ettiquette.....

I'm not sure if I agree because I've been invited and gone to weddings alone and not had a problem with it. I think a single person who really likes to dance a lot is already outgoing enough that they will meet other single fun people to dance with! FH and I don't want to pay for people we don't know and have to bump people we do know off the list.

We are leaning towards having single friends who we know are in committed relationships bring their boyfriend/girfriend and all the others will come solo. We of course will do the best job seating single people together & besides our single friends are fun, independent, outgoing people, they don't need to have a date to have a good time!

Having single guest bring a date adds up so fast!! We don't wanna sound cheap, but it's not like we're paying $30 bucks a person!! If we were that would be a different story!

Exactly... and if someone approaches ME and says they REALLY want to bring someone, then I won't say no (unless our YES list is out of CONTROL). But I don't want the situation like kittythestray mentioned where guys 'don't know' who they're bringing yet. No. You come alone. lol
