My guest list is kind of high... how did you handle single friends and 'guests'?

Original post by sarahradio5

I feel bad not inviting people with guests, but we are WAY over on our guest list!

What are you doing/did you do? Did you openly invite people 'with guest'. Did you wait for them to ask if they could bring someone? Did you only invite guests if you knew them well?

The middle ground is what everyone has been saying all along, if the person isn't in a serious relationship, then don't feel you need to include a guest. Once RSVPs start rolling in and you see you have some room, then if 'Suzy' meets a guy and REALLY wants to bring him, you have some leverage...but for now, since she's known 'Joe' for 2 months [or hasn't even met him], you shouldn't worry too much! We invited only serious couples [and we defined it as a year or longer] and had a couple people with 'surprise' serious relationships...we welcomed them b/c we had room...but if we hadn't had the room, they all understood since they were invited single, that they couldn't bring them.

Good luck.

Im hoping a lot of people will say they cant come. They say its like 20% that say no...and then Im still over!

me, too... that's why I'm wondering about single friends and whether I should invite them with guests if they're not seeing anyone?

If you can yes, I've been invited to weddings when I was in my 20's and not seeing anyone (but had guy friends) w/out a date and didn't go cause of that..

Sarah - are you still working on your invites?? you need to get them out girly! but yeah my vote is invite them alone, unless you know they;re dating someone and if they ask then let them bring the person

I invited all my single guests with a guest. They all come with a guest.

I accounted for those in my original list but I had a B list if one of them wanted to come by themselves.

Unless they know other guests, it's really not fun to come by yourself to a wedding. I would not go.

Not one invitation I sent out said 'and guest' on it. Each friend that was in a serious relationship (either living together or dating for more than one year) had a BF/GF that either FH or I had met. As a result the invitations went out to:
Miss Mary Smith
and Mr. John Doe

The good thing (in my view) about this is that there will not be one single person in attendance at our wedding that is a total stranger. I don't want to look back at pictures 20 years from now and say 'who was that' and all of a sudden remember is was the 'flavor of the month' of some friend.

It's not necessary if your guest list is too long BUT for older guest (define that as you might) I think it's a nice gesture. We invited everyone with a guest (since we were both 30 when we got married) and only one person took advantage of it (besides those who were married, in serious relationships I mean).

hahahaha I know who that was!!!

We invited all of our single guests 'with guest' even though our guest list is out of control. Most of our friends will not bring a guest unless they are a serious guest but, have got offended in the past when they were invited solo.

ETA: When I didn't have a serious guest, I only brought someone if I didn't know a lot of the wedding guests.

I didn't 'and guest' anyone. To me the and guest means that they are not in a serious relationship with someone. I didn't want someone coming to our wedding that we didn't know.

I had a few friends from work that I invited alone because I figure they will be sitting with other people from work and it's no big deal.

I kind of also think it has to do with age...are you older or in your really early 20's? This is my opinion...if you are over 25 and so are all of your friends, you need to invite them with a guest and this is my reason: after 25, it seems that many people have some type of significant other, and in my case, the majority of my friends are married, very involved with someone and/or engaged. To invite all of them with their significant others and then tell what's now left of my 'single' friends, which there are 3 or 4 of them, that they can't bring a date...I just think that's rude. I would not want to go to a wedding if I was single and invited without a guest when all of my friends had their husbands or FH's there.

Another thing to think about is this...we were invited to my college roomate's wedding. Her rule was if you were not married or engaged, you couldn't bring a date. So, one of her friends was engaged after knowing the guy for like 4 months, so he was invited (meanwhile, that relationship ended right after my friend's HM). However, one of our other friends had been dating a guy for a few years but they were not engaged so he was not invited. Here we are 2 years later, they are still together and still not engaged. There is no way I would invite her to my wedding without him. I've known him now for 5 years! So I think that strict rule of guests that are engaged/married is not necessarily fair either.

The only time NOBODY was offended was when my other friend invited all of her college friends and that was it...married, whatever...no dates invited. It ended up pretty much being a girl's weekend and we had a blast.

I would invite single people with guests. If they aren't seeing anyone, they probably won't bring one. But I think it is just the polite thing to do. Good luck!

Our list was high too but we had friends of ours invite our friends without guests if they weren't dating someone (AND without telling them before hand)... and everyone was a little ticked off.

We invited everyone over 18 with a guest... and if 25% of them actually brought someone is a lot. It's a courtesy they should have- most won't bring someone unless they are dating someone...

If you decide to do it, maybe give your friends a heads up so they aren't shocked when they get their invite.

We are only putting 'and guest' for the bridal party, older family friends and people who are in a serious relationship.

Everyone else we will just put their name on the invitation.

I know a guy who always brings a guest to a wedding, even if he doesn't know who that will be until the night before. For some reason, he feels entitled to bringing that guest. One wedding we were at, she backed out so the couple paid for a no-show random person.

Also, weddings are where people can meet others, so its better for the single guests to come alone and try to meet another single guest!

We didn't invite single people with guests escept for my co-worker who didn't really know anyone else. All of our other single guests were good friends with a bunch of our other guests. While it's a nice thing to do, I don't think it's necessary to invite single people with guests unless they're the only single person or they don't know anyone else at the wedding.

IMO - when I was single and and was invited to a wedding without a guest, I was very insulted. I was 26 years old and invited to a wedding w/out a guest. I HATED being at a wedding by myself.
I feel it should be left up to the individual whether they bring a guest or not.
