My mom won't 'let' my younger sister go to the GYN....UPDATE

And my sister has been having irregular periods since she started her period ...she is now 19 and my mom doesn't want her to go because she thinks if the Dr puts her on the pill it will be ok for her to have sex. She is not having sex right now but has in the past. She goes like 4 months w/out a period! I want her to get checked out NOW because I am sure some day she will want to have children. Has anyone experience irregular periods like this and what was the cause? (If you don't mind me asking). FM me if it's better.

Thanks
UPDATE:
Spoke to Mom today....she brought it up and said my sister told her she spoke to me about it and that if my mom won't take her, she is going to planned parenthood. My mom sai d, fine I will take you but you are not going on the pill. My mom said she does not want her on the pill because she thinks my sister will think it's ok to have sex - I said to my mom, well then you need to have a serious discussion with her!!! I feel like the parent here. This is what happened with me, we never had any open & honest discussions about the birds & the bees! So, she is going to take her, and I said Mom - she needs to go. At least she will be regular, and have whatever it is taken care of now, and later on when she wants to have kids it won't be a mystery. My mom said Oh, she prob just has a hormonal imbalance - I was like HOW would you know that? You don't know that...she could have a cyst, she could have endometriosis - and you are just shrugging it off! I am SO glad I spoke up.

Well, she is 19, so she could really go on her own. I assume she is on your parent'' insurence still.

I have this problem & don't know the cause. when I was 16 first started to be really irregular , mmy mom MADE me go to the Dr. I am surprised your mom doesn'' wnat her to go.
I didn't go on the pill. The DR told me, that's just how my cycle was & I could go on it if I wanted.

well, if she's over 18, shouldn't she decide for herself to go. i mean, its a doctor, right? i have slightly irregular periods, w/in normal 28 day cycle, but can be a few days off. the pill helped, but i don't think it means that its okay to have sex. plus, her doctor will tell her, that the pill is only 99.9% effective against pg, but does nothing to protect against std's.

what's holding her back is yes, she is on my parent's insurance.

Can she go to planned parenthood - is it free?

IMO, you need to have a serious conversation with your mom. It is very important that your sister go at that age regardless of problems with her period, being sexually active etc..... If there are any issues it is very important to have them cleared up. You need to explain to your mom VERY SERIOUSLY, that this sort of thing is very important for your sister's health. Your mom should be encouraging this, not discouraging it. Good luck!!!! If your mom still resists, than I strongly believe you, by all means, should be the one encouraging your sis. If anything, this should help and encourage your sis to take care of herself in the future, she is still young and needs to have the message that taking charge of her health is important.

I was like that when I was younger too. My mom took me to the GYN and there was nothing he could do (I guess he didn't want to put me on the pill, I was 15 or 16). It eventually became more regular but it was still irregular (like every 40 days). Why can't she go herself or you take her? Even if she is on your parent's insurance, she doesn't have an insurance card so she can go on her own?

Planned parenthood is not free, but the prices are reduced. It would still cost (I believe--have never been but volunteered in college) over $100 for your whole yearly, including pap test, etc. They would also probably run all the STD tests if she has been active. I think she should make an appt and go--pay the copay--what will they do once they get the insurance claim?

ETA: This isn't right, but could she lie to your mom and say she has a yeast infection or soemthing and needs to go for a prescription?

she can go to planned parenthood but I don;t think that's the best place for her. A good gyn is really the best place for her. Maybe if she goes to her regular doctor and gets a NOTE your mom will have more respect for that.
Your mom sounds like my mom - living in the dark about today's world!

Yeah, I was going to suggst that. I don't think its free, but she doesn't need insurance. I thinkit is a sliding scale or something--it is affordable.

A lot of my friends did that in college, b/c they were still on their parent's insurance & since I want to a Catholic school, some of the the students came from very Catholic backgrounds, so goignton the pill wasnt' supported, even if it was for medical reasons.

ETA-- I have never been, but I am not sure how ' full scale' their services are, but if it is her only option, she should look into it.

Very well said. This is about her health, not about a moral argument...Good luck. Your sister's lucky to have you looking out for her

when i was her age I didn't even HAVE insurance.

I went to planned parenthood- that's an option for her... they charge on a 'as you can afford' basis

I had irregular periods and it was my mother who made me go to the gyno and I had to be put on the pill to get regulated. While it's reasonable for your mother to feel that way, irregular periods aren't always good news and it's really important that your sister go get checked out, because god forbid something is happening in her body that will prevent her from having children in the future.

Re: My mom won't 'let' my younger sister go to the GYN....

any woman who lives on LI...# 1 Breast Cancer rate in the world...needs to go to the GYN at least once a year.

My sister has a serious case of endometrious....this can cause irregular periods....The doctor never thought that my sister would be able to get preggo, without all kinds of fertility help. She was only 19 when she was diagnosed with endometrious. She was very lucky to have the son that she has...and believe me her pregancy was extremly high risk....it caused her placenta to mature too early and an emergancy c-section was performed. She still has the endometrious...and it looks like she will never be able to carry again. She is very lucky that she did get pregnant...she is only 23 now...and knows that if she didnt have her son at 21...she never would have had a child of her own. True 21 is young to have a child...but she is lucky because she has a wonderful husband and a handsome little boy. She loves her family so much....and she is so grateful that she had the knowledge that something is wrong...and if she wanted a family it was then or never.

your sister may have nothing wrong...but none the less she should know that for sure...so that she has the oppurtunity to make her own decisions if anything is wrong....she will never forgive your mother if something is wrong now....that she could done something about.

#1 in the world!? that seems a little hard to believe.

If possible, I would have your sister mention this to her primary physician. The doctor will INSIST that your sister go to the gyn. Maybe your mom needs to hear it from the doctor. Its not necessary for your sister to go on the pill if that is what your mom fears, but at least they can run tests to see if everything is ok. Good Luck!

I did, I just found that while higher than the national average, the rates are the same throughout the four cancer clusters in the northeast. I really think the area around Chernobyl is the highest rate in the world.

It is true. Breast Cancer rates are absolutely astronomical on LI.
