Y cant i have a mom who wants to help in this whole process. Mine just wants to critize everything i do. its driving me mad. Why do you need a wedding. Why are you looking at halls so far away... Blah Blah Blah....I cant take it and the planning is just starting.
At this point I am ready to screw it and elope.....

Planning can bring out the worst in people.
I know it's hard to do but just keep moving along with your plans. Hopefully your mom will come around and see that this is going to happen whether or not she is onboard with everything.
I'm sorry that you are going through this! Remember that this day is for you and FH so make it as special as you want it.

thanks but this just brings out alot of my concerns. I have very strange parents who dont attend any functions like a wedding...they tend to avoid or if they must go they look so out of place.
i am afriad my mother will attempt to serve people food during the cocktail hour or start yelling at people for drinking too much.........

Hmmm ... Not sure what to say about this but if these are truly your concerns perhaps you can find a way to talk to her and let her know how you feel.

LOL omg... my om was the exact same way in the beginning... couldnt agree with me on anything and made fun of all my decisions.... Shes gotten alot better and realized im a stubborn b*tch and not gonna change my idea of a wedding to fit hers

i think its harder when you have parents that were raised in rural areas of other countries. they dont think the same way we do. but she had a wedding and it was 4 days before i was born...so seriously if she can have one then y keep driving me nuts about mine....grrrrrr

boo... i'm sorry that your mom is being so difficult. what i might do is to step away a little. once you have the hall booked, then hopefully she will see that it will be beautiful and perfect.

My mom was the same way but you just have to stand by what makes you and FH happy. Your mom will come around when it gets closer to the wedding. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

moms will be moms- mine is very similar- she wants this and that, why are we doing this, etc but guess what? we're paying - i tell her that and she says ok whatever you want lol

My mom was very ho hum in the beginning too, telling me that I was planning way too early, not acting interested and when ever I brought up the wedding she changed the subject. It really hurt my feelings. So much so that one day I just sat down and tearfully explained to her how it made me feel. She didn't realize half the stuff she was doing, told me that believe it or not she is extremely excited that her only daughter, her baby, was getting married, and that the whole wedding just makes her feel bad because she doesn't really have the money to help. I had no idea thats how she felt.
Since our talk things have gotten better. I suggest talking with your mom and tell her how she's making you feel. Your mom loves you and she doesn't mean to cause you any stress.

I feel your pain except that its my dad who gives me trouble. You said something that resonates with me. My parent's aren't from a rural area but from a different country (Guatemala). So he compares my wedding to his wedding... which was a church service and a party at his parent's house and think i am crazy to be looking at hall. But I do the same thing I always do, I ignore him... and I get my way....
But your mom will come around in time.

OMG - mine too!!! My mom told me that if I did not do things her way she was going to have no part in my wedding.
We fight constantly and I have to bite my tongue half the time!

That sounds like my mom! Literally 5 days after I told her we were engaged I wanted to elope. I don't take her to anything with me because she criticizes everything. Even the things I'm paying for she has to pick apart. It's a little painful because I want to be able to do things with her, but it's more mentally healthy for me if I don't.
