Re: My resume

A few typos jump out at me: 'simultaneously' and 'liaison.' I'm going to give it a more careful read now...

Personally I don't use an objective in my resume...Some people do...

And I would never put interests on either...

That's a good point about the 'objective.' The objective used to be a standard part of any resume, but it's used less and less frequently these days. Not a requirement at all.

Re: My resume

There are def. some typos (besides the ones already listed - see the 2nd editor in your title

I don't know much about the publishing world but it looks like a solid resume to me -

Can your skills/background transition to any other industry?

I used to be a paralegal then hated it so I became an Executive Assistant

Re: My resume

As far as the typos, I am not sure why they showed up here. They are all spelled correctly on the original (I just checked)

And the objective was something I never had in the past, but I added recently because someone else suggested.

Re: My resume

I think that the resume is strong overall. I especially like the action verbs and specific details in your bullet points. I have a few comments/suggestions, in no particular order. (Some of the things I comment on here might look different in the Word document, I know...)

1. Minor format point: the heading 'Experience' should be in all caps, to match the other headings.

2. Typo in the word 'Editor' in your 'Assistant Managing Editor/Assistant Editor' heading (2000-2005).

3. Some of your bullet points end with a period, and some end without any punctuation. Either format is correct as long as the format is used consistently throughout the document. See what I mean? (Sounds really nitpicky, but HR people do notice these things.)

4. There are a few places where you might want to add more specific details, as long as the details aren't confidential. For example, you could put in the name of the 'middle grade series' that you co-edited, or some titles of the 'various college guides' that you helped to prepare.

5. I'm not sure how much room you have on the page, but if there's a lot of white space, consider separating your 'Assistant Managing Editor' and 'Assistant Editor' jobs into two separate, headed experiences with their own bullet points.

If you haven't had enough of my nitpicky comments, I'm happy to look at the layout of the Word doc, too. Just fm me!

For editorial jobs, they sometimes want to know if you have any hobbies because you may be editing a book that covers a certain hobby or special interest.

Re: My resume

I think you need numbers to back up your statements to make it 'wow' someone.

'Read unsolicited manuscripts and wrote reader’s reports'

Could you put in a number? Read over 300 manuscripts annually and wrote 50 published reader reports., or something like that?

I would also cut out the objective. Unless you have something specific to say, it is worthless. Helping a group work towards a common goal is a given, so I would get rid of that. I also got rid of my interests section, just because from reading resumes nothing ever struck me as that amazing. That can always be brought up in the interview if they ask about other interests.

Re: My resume

Oh, and if you haven't done so already, put your college GPA in if it's over 3.0! Even though you graduated in 1998, your major is directly relevant to your career, and signs that you did well in your academic training can only strengthen your application.

Numbers are a great idea!

I would really have to think of how many manuscripts we read. Where else could I use numbers?

Re: My resume

My $.02! Warning, I'm gonna be blunt. When I review resumes I barely look at ones that are just bullet points. I want to see some creativity and thought behind it. Thus, the objective is very important. So is an opening letter that should accompany a resume. I felt your objective is a bit weak. You need to stand out from among the rest. The only way to do that with your resume is to be as creative as possible. Here's an example of bumping it up a notch or two. Let me know what you think?

Objective:
To captivate and capture an audience with the creative power and pizzaaz of 'the pen' and the written word. Also via strong interpersonal, research and organizational skills be instrumental in contributing to the positive growth and upward mobility of a prominent publishing organization.

Here's another one:

Prepared sales, production, and acquisition reports for Managing Editor
and President/Publisher

Prepared over 100 reports...Or whatever. I would cut out the assemble kits line just because I picture someone stuffing boxes.

Oh yeah, one other thing. Please remember that a resume is designed to do one thing and one thing only. Get the interview. It is not supposed to sell you. If it does then there is no need to meet you. The resume needs to sell the interview.

.

I do the exact opposite. I can't stand wordiness. I need to make a decision quickly, so I look for position titles & years first.
Whe I meet with someone, I then look at their details, so I can ask them specifics in the intervew.

I don't look at t the objective, b/c if you applied for the marketing coordinator position, I assume your objective is to work as a marketing coordinator.

I do look for objectives when resumes are randomly faxed in , especially if they do not have a cover letter.

Yes, it does. Though sadly, part of it is packing boxes.
