I think it is great if you can stay at home with your kids and see every step of their lives. If you are set financially and can do it I say go for it!!! Good for You

Tell her you think it's a waste for her to have a nice home yet spend all her time at work.
People should just mind their own business - what's right for some people could be very wrong for other people.

Well, this time it is SAH Wife though.
ETA: I thought you meant stay at home wife. Never mind! None of her business anyway. I do think it is good to work until you have kids though, if only to contribute to your own retirement funds and social security.

Thanks don! She's 24 and more if the independent, wants to contribute to society type person.....we are VERY different.
I'd love at least the CHANCE to stay at home without kids...doesn't mean I'll like it. It would be nice to say my DH makes that much money that we can if I wanted to.....
BUT for now...I work....

I agree - how wonderful for you if you have the option! I'll be honest, I daydream about DH's band one day being famous so I don't have to work anymore, but of course I don't tell him that! No one really LOVES waking up and going to work for 8-10 hours a day, right? That's awesome if you choose to stay home. JMO, your sis might be jealous that she can't do the same. I know I would be if my sis told me that
It's your choice either way - I remember your last post about this, and it sounds like that's what would make you happiest, so go for it :) We need more happy people in the world anyway!

Just stop listening to people. I have learned the hard way. What works for one does not necessarily work for others. Same as SAHM. Most women used to be SAHW and it worked for them so if you are able to do it..do so.

Being a stay at home wife or mom is very hard work, I work part time and I can tell you that going to work is easier than being at home with the kids. Good for you if you want to devote your time to your home and family, it's the heardest job you'll ever have, but it is also very fulfilling.

Re: My sister yelled at me b/c I want to be a SAHW...
I'm a housewife.
We have a nice brand new home on over an acre, a new F250 and Escape, both our degrees are paid off and are living a very nice life on my husband's small military salary and had all of that by time we were 24.
I would rather be a housewife and be around him as much as I can when he is not deployed then work 40 hours for real low pay. (we are in Florida) We have an immaculate house with nice things, I am able to cook great meals every night, be available to help him and support him at the base if I need to go there during the day, we entertain alot also and it is great to be able to just go on vactaions when I want and not have to ask for time off..
And then I just volunteer or work temp jobs when he is deployed.
But at the same time, he has great job security so I can do this and not worry about him losing his job, benefits... etc.
I don't consider it a waste at all, especially since my salary would most likely be under 10,000 a year here. We both want me to be home with our children too since he won't always be around and we are TTC right now.
Don't listen to what other people think, has she done it? If she hasen't then she has no idea.
I think it is a gift to be able to be home and I always have my Degree to fall back on if we need or if I get bored. Also, I'm in the panhandle and the job market isn't that great down here if I had more opportunities I might take them but right now volunteering and being a housewife has been great!

I would give anything to be able to stay home - and take care of the house - that would be a dream. However, I have a child and live in an apartment on Long Island and not willing to move out of state. So I go to work.
But to me - if you are able to stay home than why not? Tell your sister to mind her business!

No problem Shana!
Our lifestyle has just taught us what is really important to us. Not everyone understands it.
But I believe that since alot of wives drive now and most families have two cars that being a housewife doesn't mean you are just stuck at home all day like it did 15 plus years ago.
People told us that getting married at 23 was a waste.. etc. We are now 25 and have been really blessed with what we have been able to obtain on our own. We are happy, healthy and that is all that should matter. Do what is best for you two not what is best for your sister.

Laurie - I think you just became the poster girl for exactly what some of us were trying to say we wanted on the thread that got a bit out of hand.
Congrats to you to being able to live the life YOU want (and now some of us are jealous of ... ).

Shana You can be sensitve (like I am) but that's what makes you so special.. While its easy for us to say 'don't listen to your sister, she is just being mean and jealous,' I know it probably hurts to hear comments like that - - and also comments like those probably give you pause to doubt the decisions you have made about staying at home
I think that being either a SAHW or SAHM can be incredibly fulfilling and worthwhile .. it truly depends on the individual and what makes you tick. I know you aren't taking your decisions lightly and that for YOU, this is what you truly feel makes you content and happy.
I truly applaud ANYONE who can determine what it is in life that can make them happy, because so many of us are doing things we don't want to be doing and are spending our days miserable as a result.
Be happy and follow your heart

Re: My sister yelled at me b/c I want to be a SAHW...
Hey I think thats great if you want to be a SAHW - I'm very jealous of women who can do that esp. w/ children - but for me, I would get bored every day w/o kids.... My goal is to be able to stay home when I have kids for a few yrs since my mom was a SAH.
I am sure being a SAHW is fulfilling but let's face it - it is much easier than being a full time working wife (I'm not factoring in kids) - I work 45 hours a week in Manhattan at a pretty demanding job (marketing mgr) and then I come home and have to cook and clean (DH helps alot) but since I get home at 630 or 7 I dont cook every night because I'm just too damn tired! However, the work at home is still there!
I feel fulfilled that I am productive and have a career but there are some days that I wish I could just sleep in and just have to take care of the house and not have to worry about getting through my hectic work week of budgets, meetings, reports etc..... but its great to have my own paycheck and not have to ask my DH for $$ - I guess thats how it would be if you were a SAHW?
