MY WEDDING IS OFF; I KNOW I SHOULD RETURN THE RING, BUT...
Original post by shelly_l
Good morning ladies!
I know that etiquette dictates that you return the ring since it's a promise for a wedding that obviously won't happen. We were paying for the wedding ourselves, and agreed that I'd handle the deposits to the vendors to give him time to clear up some of his bills, then he'd pay the balances when they were due. Thankfully, I've only shelled out $2K to date, so should I sell the ring to recoup my money (yes, tacky and petty, I know), or should I be a better person and do the right thing and return the ring?
P.S. I also gave up my apt in Queens to move to (gasp) the Bronx (I was renting, he owns a coop); and sold my furniture that I didn't place in storage.

Sorry that you guys didn't work out. I would suggest having him sign something stating he is okay with you selling your ring to recoup lost expenses. The paperwork should list everything along with its value.

I would personally give back the ring because that would be my way of saying that i dont need you and you can keep it-if you have it, it is a reminder of him unless you do sell it.

I must say that if you guys are breaking up for reasons mutual or because of solely you then you should return the ring...not only because it's a legal matter but because it's only right. He bought that ring with the intention that you two were going to spend the rest of your lives together. That ring was a symbol of a marriage to come. In addition, I know from a friend firsthand that if you do NOT return the ring, and he wants it back say in the future, you can be brought to small claims...Moreover, your 2k should be covered by him.
HOWEVER..........if the SOB cheated on you KEEP THE RING AND SCREW SMALL CLAIMS!! Just my opinion!

I'm so sorry that you are having to go through this> it is really weird that he would not want you to have his cell #, Let alone know that he had a cell. I could understand how you wouldn't (and probably shouldnt) trust him. I know this is difficult now, but you are so lucky to have the courage to be doing this now.
I agree iwth the other girls. Get everything in writing. I wouldn't trust him to simply keep his word at this point> cynical? maybe< but practical

My husband took contract law and one of their case studies was this case in which it was ruled that an engagement ring is considered a gift, not consideration for a contract.
