Name change

Name change

I know this has been done time and time again but of course I can't find the threads.

Does anyone have info on what/how to do this? I wasn't going to worry about it until after all the wedding hooplah was done...but I'm now starting a new job one week after I get back from the HM.

If I wait to change my name, they're going to have to set everything up under my maiden name and then change it down the road. I don't want them to do double work. They cannot process my info under the new name until my SS card has it.

So I need to literally get it done the day I'm back from the HM (assuming the marriage license has arrive bc I believe I have to wait for that, right?)

What do I have to do and how long does it take to get the new SS card?
TIA

Re: Name change

go down to the SS office and apply for a new card.
go to the DMV and get a new license.

took about a week for me to get my SS card and then i was able to change my name at work (they need the marriage license and SS card). everything at work changed by the next day.

you can change your credit cards over the phone.

Great thanks! If I go the first day back from HM I MIGHT have the SS in time for the first day of work. Will be cutting it close but we'll see! Thanks!

You need your marriage license to change it at SS so you'll def have to wait for it to come in the mail if it isn't waiting for you when you come home from your honeymoon. I went to SS first with my marriage license, birth certificate and my drivers license - I think that was all I needed. I got the card about a week later, but I asked the woman when it actually goes into effect of me having the last name and she said the next day (I forget why I needed to know but it was important at the time), so technically the day after you go to SS, that's your new last name.

Then I changed my credit cards over the phone and went to dmv like a week or two later, and for the dmv you have to bring the marriage license also.

yeah both the dmv and SS give you a paper saying your name as changed to use in the meantime before you get your new cards!

Thanks again guys! Maybe that paper will be enough. I'll talk to HR on my first day while I'm doing enrollment, etc. Hopefully they'll wait to setup my email address. This is terrible timing! lol

I did everything the day I got back from my HM too because I had the day off. I did everything in one day, bank, ss and DMV. Got my SS card in 5 days. They will give you a receipt with your new name that can serve as proof that it changed. You can change other stuff, records, etc probably even your job will accept just your original marriage license as proof of what your legal name is.
