Name Change Information - Kind of long
Sorry I haven't been posting. I have more going on now then while I was planning the wedding...
Since I was so confused over this process, I felt the need to let future brides know what I found out.
I went yesterday to the SS office in Jamaica Queens. I got there at 7am and was out in 15 minutes. Let's go back to when I file for my marriage license.....
I requested to change my last new to DHs, so when I received my Certificate it stated New Surname:DH last name.
I thought I had to change my name, but when I got to the SS office the lady was very nice and explained to me the following:
1-you don't have to change your last name because you asked to when you file for the license. That just give you the right to change it when ever you want to.
2-But once you change it, you can't go back to your maiden name.
3- you can keep your last name and add DH last name with a hyphen or WITHOUT a hyphen.
You can't do that on the actual certificate, but you CAN do this on you SS card.
4- She advise that is easier to just have one last name and not two, just b/c at time, people will only write in your first last name listed and that can create problems.
After all, I decided to change my last name to DH's
But thought this might be helpful for future brides that would want to keep their last name or add their DH without a hyphen.
