Okay, so I have owed taxes since 2002. Its not a HUGE amount but it isnt small either. I havent had a bank account for a few years either because IM afraid they will freeze it. So, with that being said, once I marry FH will the IRS be able to seize his money or can that only happen if I legally change my last name???

this is a big source of motivation for me to pay off all my random debts before we get married. I don't want to bring any additional financial strains into our marriage.

Yeah you should definitely do that cause I feel so bad thinking about ruining his credit cause I married him! And if not changing my name will keep him safe then Ill just ahev to wait. Itll suck but better safe than sorry.

Hopefully someone can help us LOL! Ive been sticking my checks in his bank account for years and the IRS never did anything so maybe if I keep doing that without legally changing the name it wont be a problem.

Re: Name change worries
Not totally sure about it (you might want to ask your accountant or a lawyer) but I think as long as your name (even if you legally changed your name to his) is not on his checkings/savings account they won't go after him (you owe the money & not him so you are the person responsible for it - you filed as single & not joint). However, if you have properties together (with your name on it) the IRS can go after that. It can also get complicated when you file joint later because whatever refunds you both are getting will all go to the IRS. Goodluck!

I would check with an accountant or lawyer- but I know that the IRS will allow you to do payment plans- so you might want to consider coming to terms with them so it won't affect your husband

Re: Name change worries
Your name change won't make a difference. You're just as married whether or not you change your name.
You really need to contact the IRS. They will work out a payment plan for you that you can afford. You shouldn't let this go. It will ruin your credit for many years.

Suzie Orman needs to familiarize herself with domestic relations law then. Several states disagree with her. Personal property law and marriage law is a power of the state - every state is different.
ETA - This is not a comment on the OP's post -- I honestly do NOT know whether they can freeze her husband's accounts or go after his wages.

Re: Name change worries
Your best bet would be to consult with a CPA.
He/She should be able to help you work out your problems with the IRS, so you and your husband won't be penalized later.

She's not the greatest expert. Her financial advise for women is just about unobtainable. Easy for her to follow because she has already made her money. Not at all easy for the rest of us normal folks.

i think you sould clear up your debt and pay the IRS before marrying FH. its just not worth the aggrivation and problems it COULD cause!
