Names...is this weird?

Okay so some of you will find this weird, others may agree - I honestly feel like changing my last name is a bit traumatizing, like i'm changing my identity.

My FH's last name is very basic - Davis. And mine is Italian and i LOVE it. So i joked around with him in the past about not changing mine and even him changing his. He wasn't having it!! So I came to terms that I'll change my name and possibly keep my maiden name professionally. UNTIL...

We were sitting at the table during Christmas and talking about last names and my FFIL said that he seriously considered changing his name to his wife's maiden name. My FFIL had a bad history with his father and as it turns out - hates! his last name. I laughed, but my FH turned to me and said 'we'll talk later.' I completely thought he was kidding until we were talking to my mom the next day and I told her the story - my FH nudged me and said 'i'm serious, we're going to talk about this' I REALLY Think he's thinking of taking my last name!!! I'm excited and weirded out at the same time.

Besides loving my name, I'd hate to lose it because the name ends with my sisters and I. My grandfather's brother didn't have any children, my dad is the only man and he only had girls

How would you feel if your FH took your last name???

I know a lot of people who have done that due to work. For example, she was an established vet so he took her name! It's not 'traditional' but def not uncommon

I say that's great! I don't see anything wrong with it at all! There's no reason (anymore) for the woman to have to be the one to change their name. FH and I briefly considered choosing a brand new last name and both of us changing it to that, but decided against it in the end.

However, I think its completely up to you guys, and whatever feels right for you is what you should do!

Def different but so cool! Do what makes you happy!

I have a very italian last name and am not really happy about taking FHs plain name, but it's very important to him and I definitely want us both to have the same last name as our kids, so I will legally change it. I will probably be keeping my last name professionally since I've already established myself with this name (and I get to hang on to it a little!)

I've always looked forward to changing my last name (it's long, I'm sick of spelling it, and no one pronounces it right lol) but my FH's last name is very plain and I'm going to kind of miss people asking me about my last name! But, I will probably still change it haha.

It's funny, I always automatically spell out my last name when talking to vendors. I do it with his but I really don't have to. It's just habit

I cant' wait to change my last name. It's long and I always have to spell it out phonetically over the phone. Pretty sure I didn't receive emails from people because of the way it's spelled. Even the student loan people can't get it right lol!

FH's last name is still unique and VERY Italian, so I'm just going from a mouthful of a last name to a smaller last name that is unique.

Never in million years would my FH consider taking mine. I wouldn't punish him with that lol.

I'm changing mine but I will miss it. My family name branch ends with me as well, all girls in my branch. But I'll miss my last name most when I initial, I'll be going from KC (which I always thought was cool, because my name is Kasey) to KK. I'm sad about it, but proud to start my own family with a greek name!

I think that's so cool! I also only have a sister and will miss my last name when I change it. I spoke to my FH about keeping my name but he wasn't too happy about that. Cheers to you and your FH!

Names...is this weird?

I have a great Italian last name and FH's name is so complicated and no one ever knows how to pronounce it. I've been debating hyphenating it but he wants me to completely change it. I don't have a middle name so we discussed moving my maiden name to that. It's hard to change my name probably because I'm the only girl in my family so I'll be the only with a different name. :/

I thought i was the only one who was traumatized about changing my last name. My FH feels really strongly about me taking his name. I am considering hyphenating but we also agreed to use my maiden name as our first child's middle name so I can carry on my family's last name

I also feel strongly against changing my name unfortunately so does FH so we shall see....Mine is a very simple 5 letter name and his is very long and hard to pronounce! I wish he would seriously think about taking mine! At the end of the day I will probably use my name professionally bc I am a special ed teacher and the kids would butcher it and change it for everything else. I totally get how your feeling and think its a great idea!

Names...is this weird?

I have mixed feelings about the whole name change. It is definitely a identity thing, I have been called by my last name for as long as I can remember and not really crazy about FHs last name. But I think that taking his family name is the such a sign of respect and totally becoming husband and wife.

Re: Names...is this weird?

My husband has a very Italian last name and I had a very Irish last name. And since he barely looks Italian, we always joked with him and called him by his first name and my maiden name. But as nice as would have been, I wanted to stick with tradition and he never would have done it. Besides I would felt bad because like you, there's not many left to carry on the family name on his side but on my side, there is.

If your FH is going to consider it, I think it's awesome and that story sounds like it's meant to be!

I have been thinking about hyphenating my last name as well for professional reasons. all my certifications are in my maiden name and I don't really feel like changing them. It does mean alot to my FH that I take his last name. He has hinted millions of times about taking it. Has anyone on here hyphened their name? I would love to hear how it has been working out for them so that it can help me make my decision

I think its completely amazing if your fiance would change his name to yours!

I've been thinking about the name issue myself - luckily my fiance doesn't have a preference for what I do so there is no pressure there. I am also one of three girls in my family with my last name, and I don't really like the idea of giving up a part of my identity in favor of his - it doesn't really fit either of our personalities or our relationship. So, I'm thinking about hyphenating. It'll make my last name a lot longer, but it feels right to me. Ideally I would LOVE if he would hyphenate his too, but I don't really think he'll want to, and that's ok too - I think the most important thing is that both people in the relationship agree on and respect the decision, one way or another.

Re: Names...is this weird?

First, it's awesome that you and your husband are considering non-traditional name options! I promise not to go off on a feminist rant , but a woman taking her husband's last name is just one of those 'male privileges' that our society should be questioning more. It's the mark of a strong and secure man that your FH might be willing to go against convention and do something unique that works for you as a couple.

Sure, people might question your decision, but hey, that always happens to trendsetters! A name is a big deal, so you two should definitely do what feels right to both of you, regardless of what others thing. Good luck! Let us know what you decide!

Names...is this weird?

We just got back from our honeymoon, so I haven't changed anything yet, but I am having major issues with the idea of changing my name. When we went for our marriage license I was crying as I was filling out the application I was so upset because it really feels like you are changing your identity, and I have a horrible last name, but it still is who I've been for the past 28 years. FH after we filled out the marriage license said if I don't want too, I don't have to change it. I think I'm going to wait until we consider having kids before I change it legally.

I think it's really awesome that he wants to take your last name. I say go for it!
