Naming your son a junior or III?

Naming your son a junior or III?

What are your thoughts on this?

I am not a big fan of this. I would want my son to have his own name. Fh is a junior and he is not even called by his name- he has to be called junie or junior which I do not like. He even presented the idea of continuing the tradition if we have a son.
I would not mind them sharing a middle name, but that is as far as I would like to go.

Hmm... I have always grown up with my brother being a Junior and cousins as Juniors... HOWEVER, NOT one of them was ever called Junior, JR, or whatever. They were always called by their names maybe with their name proceeded by the word 'little' occasionally (ex. Little Mike).

Anyway, my point is, I have always like the Jr. thing. But FH is not a fan. He's not used to it like I am.

I'm not a big fan. My husband is a junior, and he's sometimes called Junior by his parents (I hate it).

I really don't want a III, but I can understand if he does (he doesn't have a strong preference at the moment).

Part of the problem is, its not a great name

Never, never , never!! I do not like that at all!! My middle name is Rose, both my grandma's names were Rose, my mothers name is Rosana!! do you see a trend here!! One of my grandmothers actually asked if I was going to be named Rose?!?! LOL....my mom said no...we have enough in the family!

I'm not into the junior thing either. I prefer the Jewish tradition of naming after the dead, or after no one at all. I don't like the idea of 5 people named Eric all in the same family. JMO

I'm not into the Jr thing. My husband has the same first name as his father but they have different middle names so he is not a jr.
He also has a cousin with the same first name so if we ever have a son,he will not have the same first name.He may possibly have it as his middle.(Its already been discussed.)

I'm so not into the Jr thing. I want my child(ren) to have their own identities.

Our first son will probably be a III. My FH is a Jr, and he is never referred to as 'Little' or 'Junior', he is always referred to as the long version of his name, and his dad the short version. My FH's greatest joy is carrying on his fathers name, and making him proud, and he sees it as an honor to do so, his father is an amazing man, and it's a fitting tribute to him. It's really not an issue of not having your own identity, as that is based solely upon how you raise a child. FH very much has his own identity, and FFIL is the one that saw to that. I have no problem with having another one, and I think it will be adorable to see my husband with his namesake!!

That is if we ever have a boy.

In my opinion, the tradition of naming your kid after yourself is strange. There are a million names out there, why saddle the kid with the same name as yours? I don't understand the reasoning behind it and won't be doing it. Thankfully, DH agrees with me.

my honey wants a Jr... I'll be more than happy to give him one - granted he gives me the right fish!

No Juniors for us. I told DH 'I love only one Scott and am going to keep it that way'. I have always hated the idea of a Junior. And I also wouldn't name a child my name. So it is fair, both ways.

I love the kids named after the father. Especially when the father has done something great. I don't think a name gives you your identity. I know my name does not define me.

I always say I am going to name my daughter after me b/c I love my name.

my brother is already a III. he and my SIL like the idea of a IV as my brother is pretty much the end of the line of our last name. their gameplan was to legally name their son John Alexander Smith IV, but have him go by Alexander.

My FI wants a JR so bad, so we will be naming our first son John Joseph

I've always liked the names Jason, Nicholas and Justin so I get to name the second boy lol

Oh and I get to name the girls

I'd like my kids to have their own names. Names are a personal thing and should be unique. IMO
I don't have to worry about that since FH is Jewish and you can't name after living relations. (or close living relations)

To me giving your child your name is egotistical and I simply don't care for the tradition.

I will say that I do like it when a parent names a child after a cherished family member - to me they are honoring that person - not trying to make a mini copy of themselves.

FH hates it to - His father is an edward, his brother is an edward, and his brothers son is also an edward and FH's middle name is edward. (all 3 different middle names - but they call them Ed, Big ed, and little eddie

I don't really think names are unique. No matter how strange and crazy the names get there is always some one some where with that name.
