I am not a big fan of this. I would want my son to have his own name. Fh is a junior and he is not even called by his name- he has to be called junie or junior which I do not like. He even presented the idea of continuing the tradition if we have a son. I would not mind them sharing a middle name, but that is as far as I would like to go.

Re: Naming your son a junior or III?
I mean unique to the family... like in your immediate family there won't be another 'stacy mclastname' ... unless someone else down the line takes it. Like there are no other Tracys in my family... and i like it.

Re: Naming your son a junior or III?
What kinda drives me bananas with the responses here is that people think it's an egotistical thing to name a child after his father. I mean, names are never unique, and honestly, where could there be more meaning in something in a persons life than his or her name? I'd rather my child be able to say 'I'm named for my grandfather' than 'Mom and Dad named me by picking it out of a book' or 'I heard it in a movie and I liked it' (Which is my name by the way...although I am also named for my Grandmother and Grandfather). Ego has very little to do with this, and my FH has never once felt 'saddled' with his name, it's a privilege to be named for the man that shaped him, and honestly, if it weren't for my FFIL, I wouldn't be getting the amazing man I am marrying in 3 weeks. So I just tend to think that when it comes to naming your child something meaningful, there is no better way to do it than to look within your own family, should the opportunity present itself.
I wasn't slamming anyone's response in particular here, just a generalization...everyone is entitled to her opinion!

Re: Naming your son a junior or III?
Misty I can understand your point, I just would rather my child have a different name than mommy or daddy. As I said my FH NEVER gets called by his name, he gets called Junior- that is not a name.

You're right, I'd hate it if FH was called that, I'm glad he's not! And I will be the one to see to it that my son (should I have one) is called by his name as well!

Re: Naming your son a junior or III?
My son's name (when we have one) will be Thomas Joseph Jr.....FH has already stated that!
PS the cat's name is TJ...Tom Jr or Tom and Jen -take your pick!

I hate the idea! I actually have the same name as my mom , and it has been a huge pain in the a$$ my entire life! It does take away from your individual identity. There are so many names out there, I dont see the need to name a child after yourself, you are already carrying down a last name, why the first too? Just my opinion!

Re: Naming your son a junior or III?
My younger brother is named after my father. His friends call him Alex, but everyone in the family calls him Junie.
He doesn't seem to mind though and considers it an honor to be named after a man that we all respect and adore.
That being said, I have no plans to name my child after my husband or myself. But every intention of naming my first born after my father. And I have a strong feeling that when my brother marries, his son will also have that name.

Re: Naming your son a junior or III?
Patrick is a junior, but the buck stops there. He hated sharing a name, being called 'Little Pat' (which he hated), and having his dad open his mail by 'accident' (which he suspected was snooping and never really an accident ). Now he's been fighting to have his dad's credit cards removed from his credit report. He says it's just a big hassle and doesn't want to do that to his child. That said, if our baby is a boy, his middle name will be Patrick, but Not his first.

Re: Naming your son a junior or III?
I don't like 'Jr' and neither does my DH, especially since he was named after his grandfather and they share the same last name as well. And like JennRenee said about Patrick, sometimes Joe's mail ends up at his grandmother's house because it's the same name (although different addresses), and it's even worse since the man is deceased, so to see your own name on a tombstone is kind of freaky!!!
I love the name Joseph, but if we have a boy, DH doesn't want a Jr or even a Joseph -- there are too many in his family. I would use it as a middle name, but he doesn't even want that!!!!

Re: Naming your son a junior or III?
I have the same first name as my mother but not the same middle name. I never really minded it, but there was always confusion between us with credit card companies, doctors etc. We really had to keep up on some things to make sure they stayed straight.
edited to add: and the name is Elizabeth, and I was Liz Mom was Betty, so family wise it was no problem at all!!

Re: Naming your son a junior or III?
I used to LOVE the idea, until a coworker of mine told me he wanted his son to have his own identity and didnt have a junior. It OPENED MY EYES to how I feel now.
MY husband REALLY wanted a Junior, always talked about it when we were dating, so I know it meant alot to him, and John isnt too bad of a name. and so I just added my favorite boys name, Anthony. I just hope it sticks as he grows up and hes not called Little John And hes not a Jr really because the middle name is different. But in my husbands eyes, the first name being the same is more meaningful than the TRUE concept of 'junior' LOL. =) (Thank goodness!)
My cousin has a Jr and they just call them Joey (the little one) and Joe, the dad, but theres still a mix up because her DH was always Joey when they dated. now they say JOE just to differentiate.

Re: Naming your son a junior or III?
My DH wants there to be a junior. I come from a family of all juniors.. 3 Eugenes (yuck!), 2 sets of Pauls, his family..everyone is a junior..even his grandmother, mother and sister have the same name. The mail, phone calls, everything gets confusing. I would like our children to have not to have the same name as anyone in our family..just to be different for a change!

Re: Naming your son a junior or III?
Dawnie, your post made me laugh, because my great grandfather was named Antonio, and he had 10 children who lived to adulthood. EACH ONE of those children named a child Anthony, Antonio, Antonella, Antonina or Antonia, and MANY of those children have children named Anthony. I must have 30 uncles, aunts, and cousins named Anthony or some form of it, as well as my brother, and most of them are Anthony MyMaidenName. We distinguish them by who their parents or children are (ex: Anthony, Mario's son, or Anthony, Cella's dad...).

Re: Naming your son a junior or III?
We had many people in my family named after others...
We've got Phil (my grandfather), Philly (my uncle) and Philip (my cousin). Also Lizzie and Elizabeth. And Sal and Sally Boy. It goes on and on...
My cousin and I are both Lisa. She's about 20 years older than me, and I always knew her as LisaAnn. I thought that was her name until I found out years later that the family only started using her middle name after I was born.
And my DH who most people call Al, but his family call him Alfred and his parents sometimes call him Jr. Not liking the name Alfred is another reason why I'm not so find of having a III.

Re: Naming your son a junior or III?
We have it easy...sort of! DH is Jewish, so no Jrs. in this family. However, he wants to use the letter 'S' to honor his late father...fine by me, except we can't agree on ANY names!!!!!
7 weeks to go and we're not even *close* to having a or name!!!
And, for the record, he still wants to name his son Storm. Please be a girl, please be a girl!! J/K!!!

Re: Naming your son a junior or III?
My brother is a Jr and I know he dosen't like it at all. I personally don't want my son to have the same last name as my FH. So we aggreed that our first son would have his middle name first, and first name as his middle name.

I'm not too into JR's so our first son will have my FH's name as his middle name.
