Need help and great advice

Hi! im 23 and my fiance and I have to pay for our own wedding which you all know is VIRTUALLY impossible! we live in Long Island and would like to have a nice big backyard wedding but dont have the yard or know anyone who does. Is there any suggestions for outdoor venues that would be inexpensive????

I don't have a space to suggest, but I know that a lot of girls on here have said that unfortunately with all the rentals and things you need to have a wedding outside, it can be just as expensive or even more so.

Make sure you price out both options before committing to one, so you are getting the most you can for your $$.

When I lived on the west coast I had a friend in a similar situation as you, so she used her parents home, catered in Subway, and had an ipod playlist playing music for the reception. Its nothing fancy but it worked for her, and was very affordable. If you are looking for food more classy than subway there are plenty of options,

As far as space, I dont know how much a permit would cost but have you though about using a public park?

just my 2cents

I agree. Permits, tent rentals, porta-potties, tables & chairs, catering, bartenders, waitresses, valets....
There are many places that offer decent packages at a decent price.

Do yourself a huge favor and keep your guest list SMALL since you and FH are paying for the wedding yourselves. Consider a daytime instead of evening, Sunday or Friday instead of Saturday.
Research your options and make a budget before committing to anything.

You can try a public park. You would probably need to get a permit, so talk to them.

I have to be honest though, when putting together an outdoor event price everything out. Because it's not at a catering place, you will likely have to rent a tent, tables, chairs, stemware, silverware, china, etc....and this can all add up. Research your options carefully.

Consider having your reception at a restaurant with a back room. I know someone who only had her absolute closest family and friends -- 36 people at her wedding. She has it at a restaurant in a private room, and I think it was very affordable. Also, it looks like you have a couple of years, you have time to save, get raises at work, etc. Good luck!

Try looking at the lido mushrooms at the beach. They have ones that are covered. You can fit allot of people. It is very cheap to rent $75.00 ish. You can hire someone to cook for you. It's very casual though. It's an outside BBQ. You don't have to rent chairs.

I had a backyard party for my daughters communion because I thought it would be cheaper...oh how wrong I was!

The food, the liquor, the rentals, the glasses, ect add up so quick that I spent more for 40 people in my backyard then I would have if I rented a place!

Check around and be flexible with your wedding date...if you go off season you can find a great hall at unbelievable prices!

Depends on what type of party you are looking to have. What about a venue that offers an outdoor cocktail hour. If you have it on a sunday afternoonor thursday, you could save a lot of money. There are a ton of places that have outdoor venues. Most Lessings locations, Old Field Club, East Wind. Do some reasearch, don't make a commitment till you know your budget and have exhausted all options. This is a great site for inof. Congrats and happy planning

I definitely agree with looking for a restaurant that has a back room for you to rent out. There you can choose the price that you can afford to pay per guest and have less worries.

ETA:(My brother and his wife did this for their wedding and it was beautiful)

i someone recently posted about having a brunch cruise. It would be in the early afternoon and instead of having a full open bar, they're having mimosa's and punch...and maybe a few generic beers. just another thought??? good luck!

The RH that I am booked at was trying to offer us memorial day. It was only $65pp at night and would be the same as having it on a Sunday night. The minimum was 110 people on a Saturday so I am guessing the minimum is lower on other days.

Honestly, there are so many different venues you can use that would probably be more cost effective than having it in a backyard or an outdoor space.
Here are some ideas off the top of my head
1. a cocktail reception with heavy hor doerves with a signature cocktail, microbrew beer and wine. There are alot of venues in NYC that would this for you. FM me for ideas.
2. A brunch reception in a private room of a restaurant
3. an 'off day' ie a Friday or a Sunday afternoon. Or even a long holiday weekend.
4. a really nice hall (like a vfw or KOFC) and you can use a linen rental company to 'dress up' the tables and the chairs. There are lots of online rental companies that are inexpensive because you set it up yourself!

Hope this helps!!

Check out Brides Magazine July/August issue
They had GREAT ideas for wedding receptions at the
5k range
7.5k range
and 10k range

Also, I totally was just reminded about the reception hall in Oceanside, Knights of Columbus but very nice. They have a ballroom and they have a big dinner package for about 40 dollars per person.http://www.knightsofcolumbusoceanside.com/catering-gd.php

While i have all you guys here, we actually already booked the wedding for jericho terrace but postponed for the obvious financial reasons. I'm in the midst of trying to get someone to rebook the date so that we get some money back. If you guys could pass this on to your families and friends that May 2, 2008 is available at Jericho Terrace for any kind of event that would be great. Thanks, Nicole

Knights or Columbus or Moose Lodges are great places for receptions! Just make sure you know someone who is a member... they can get a discount or sometimes can use it for free!

I agree with everyone else that outdoor events could get pricey because you need EVERYTHING...we were going to have our e-party outside but it got too crazy.

A friend of mine rented a house in West Hampton and had the wedding there. I will find out for you the name. I don't think she spent too much, her husband is a chef and catered his own wedding...he was running around like a nut....but it was really nice...
