Need help planning a surprise party for DH.

My DH will be turning 30 this May and I wanted to throw him a surprise party. His b-day on a friday, is that a bad day to ahve a party on, would saturday be better?

Also it is the weekend of mother's day, shoudl I do it another weekend??

How many people os too many, I will be having it at my home, and since we have never had a party there, I am clueless.

what will the guest list be like?
you could do a theme - what is he into?
would you consider a caterer?

I think Friday might be better, so you can get it all done while he is at work

He actually gets home at 11:30 am!!

He likes the Dallas Cowboys, Yankees, Dukes of Hazzard, CHiPs, Wrestling.

I am not against a caterer, but I think with my mom I might be able to do it.

As of right now, I have 18 people, and that si my paretns, his paretns, sis, and our closest firends, ie, the bridal party members, and one additional friend from work. I want to invite more, but I am not sure who should relaly be invited. The only party I have ever had was the wedding, and I invited 200.

SHould I invited my aunts and cousin??

He doesn't really have much family that is local.

I'm thinking like a Hawaiian theme (roast pig, daquaries, lei's, grass skirts, etc ..) or a Mexican theme (margarita's, salsa, bean dip, sombrero's, quesadia's, mexican beer, moroca shakers)

What about friends of his from work too?

I kept DH's 30th to just our friends and his sister and parents and my brother and my parents. He would have more fun partying with friends than family. That was over 35 people alone. I did some food myself and had some catered. But since it wasn't in the house (rented a penthouse suite in a hotel in NYC) - I brought most of the food in myself.

Are your guests coming from different locations? I know our friends live all over the place - making Saturday really the only option. A Friday night would have made it very difficult for people to be there on time.

If you do an Hawaiian theme - I have plenty of recipes for you. I just had a party of about 30 people in October and did an Hawaiian theme and did all the cooking myself....

I just threw a surprise b-day party for FH this weekend. I keep the guest list to his friends and family members that he is close with.

It was so much fun (but I got very very drunk)

He is more of a meat and potatoes kind of man, so food is a big issue, he hates ethnic foods, like mexican, chinese, thai.

I am not sure of all of his friends form work, I know there is not a lot of them, but I can ask around.

Noone is coming form far, except if his broter came from NC, but I doubt he would come for the weekend, especially since it is mother's day weekend, and he has a baby.

You could do a BBQ ... it'll be mid-may so it'll be a great preview/kickoff to the summer BBQ season!
Marinated Chicken, Hamburgers, hotdogs, potato salad, coleslaw, etc ...

But at night, will it eb warm enough, actually i guess we can do bbq, but eat inside.

May's a tricky month. Could be warm, could be cool ... but send the guys outside to 'cook' and hang out (how cold can it be?) ... and set up everything inside to eat.

I'm trying to think of what else you can do - you can always do the standard Sausage & Peppers, chicken dish, eggplant parm, etc ... on sterno's.

I just thought a 'Summer BBQ' was a good theme - checkered table clothes, cold beer, frozen cocktails ... like a little preview of the summer after this HORRID winter! LOL.

Sounds like a good idea, and he loves to BBQ, and loves potatoe salds, stuff like that. Thanks. And we registered for BBQ and got it, so what better way to break it in??
