Need Hotel advice!!!

My mom is out looking at hotels, and the first place she chacked has no more room for blocks!!
My question is this: If the next place she finds has room to reserve a block, she wants to book them. I told her she'd be crazy to put any sort of deposit down, but she expects to give them her credit card info.
Is this the norm? Will she be penalized if the full block doesn't get booked? The wedding is 11 months away, so the rooms won't even be booked for the better part of a year, how long do they reserve them for you?

No! I checked out several hotels and no one asked me for any deposit of cc information.

SOme places will penalize you or the guest if the full block is not taken (example-one pace would charge the guest the going rate-$60-70 MORE instead of the blocked rate of all the rooms weren't blocked. I didn't go w/ them!

Thanks! Turns out they didn't take her cc info, whew!
They also offered us the conference room for the after party. There's no bar, so we can stock it with our own beers. Not bad, but there's no shuttle... we have to pay for it... Another expense$$$$!!!!
