Need opinons re: ordering invites VERY early because of sale?
HI everyone --
I am having a real dilemma and would love some of my fellow brides' opinions.
I am in love with a Checkerboard invite that is currently 10% off at FineStationery.com.
Now my only problem is my wedding is not until May 2010!!
So I know normally I would never order the invite so early but after making a few phone calls, they have no idea how much longer they will even HAVE this invite! And this is coming from the finestationery.com site as well as the printer itself, Checkerboard.
I've looked around for months now and I cannot find any invites that I love as much as this one and it's also at a price point I am comfortable with. I am seriously in love with it!!!
So is it totally insane to buy my invites this early? The sale runs until March, so I'd definitely wait til then at the very least, but it's still SUPER early.
The woman said the ink/printing itself will be fine, but I don't know what to do!! The savings are rather considerable when they are all added up, about $100 + because even the envelope lining is on sale.
Thanks and I would love to hear your opinion!!

Im actually considering doing this as well, because I'm a teacher and would just rather go through the proof and revision process over the summer. I have a very good idea of the amount I will need, however I'm going to have to wait on the addressing. Its a great question! Im can't wait to see what others think!

i would suggest you wait... you will have them sitting in your house for a year and god forbid something happens to them... and i guarantee you there will be another sale down the road, if not the same, even better... and/or the style you are in love with will change over time... and you'll be kickin yourself in the asss... but thats just my opinion

IMHO, $100 would not be enough of a savings to make me consider ordering my invitations a year in advance. As much as you love them now, you may very well find others you like better. Also, even the best laid out plans change. For example, originally we figured our cocktail hour would start at 6:30, but we bumped it up to 7 pm - not a big deal, but if our invitations had been printed already, it would have been a nuisance.

Thanks so much for the replies so far. Keep em coming! lol
The one thing I'm not toooo worried about though is changing my mind about what I like. I've done a lot of looking around for the invites and I have a pretty specific vision in mind. But I do agree that I'm a little nervous to have them sitting around for so long as well.

Are you buying just the invitation stationery now?Meaning, a blank paper that you can print on later?
If you LOVE LOVE LOVE it and it so unique that it's not easily available, then go for it.

pa -- No unfortunately they won't let me do that. I even asked if I could buy them & then hold off on having them sent to the printer for a few months, but they said no go.
The lady there said also don't order them early so I am totally unsure.
The issue is exactly that is that they are a layout/die cut design that I have not seen any where else, along w that color combo.
Grrrr ! ha!

If you are 1000000% in LOVE LOVE LOVE with them then i suggest getting them.
I'm going to start doing my invites somewhat soon too and i'm getting married after you but i know i'm not going to change my mind on the color or anything (i liked purple for 26 years.. i dont see anything changing in a year). But i wanna do it just to get it out of the way lol.
If you think u MIGHT like something else down the road then i wouldn't get it.

I was just reading the rest of the replies. If you are concerned about them getting messed up but u def want them i would get them, and put them in a tuberware box and leave them in a cool dry place (i sound like instructions)

i'm going to agree with most girls here. if you have a specific vision, you totally love them, and you think you won't change your mind, go for it! i had very specific vision for a few of my wedding elements, and i just did it. sometimes, you can't go by the wedding 'norms'...because honestly, it's all about you and if you want them, get them, or you'll be sad that you missed out. you don't want to settle months from now. and honestly, nothing's going to happen to them, just store them carefully! (i like that 'cool, dry place' instructions comment earlier :o) funny

Would they sell you the stationery and then you could go to another printer unrelated to them?
If they'll only sell you the printed product, then I would wait. We had to change the time of wedding by one hour - we didn't know this until 4 months before the wedding, and one month before the invitations were printed.

ha! cool dry place sounds right on if i do order them!
pa i agree with you about that very issue -- will something change between now & then? i do have everything confirmed with the church & hall but you do never know.
but i also know what you guys are saying. i don't want that 'shoulda coulda woulda' feeling down the road.
i am going to maybe talk to the pastor at the church we are getting married & ask her if she forsees any changes that might need to be made.
it's a very small lutheran church where my fiance's family has been going for years & actually we are the first to even get married there for a awhile anyway..but i digress! ha!
it stinks because i really am in love with them. i just get so paranoid of that 'i don't want to wait & miss out' feeling!

Re: Need opinons re: ordering invites VERY early because of sale?
If you are absolutely certain that the date and time and locations won't change, go ahead and order them. I am hand doing my invites so I ordered all the papers on clearance and all ready started making some because they take a significant amount of time and I'm doing lots of DIY's. My date is after yours so maybe i'm crazy, but it's just peace of mind to me.
Or if you are still wishy-washy on weather to order them or not, see if you can order just one as a sample and maybe make it a DIY project to recreate them or make something similar. I'm not sure what they look like exactly so I'm not sure if this is possible but I thought it would be a good suggestion.

I think there will be more sales and you should wait a bit...you can find Checkerboard invitations at so many places, its pretty likely you'll get that sale price your currently looking at or lower. Just get the model number of the set you want.
You still have a year before you'd have to send them out, trust me, there's a strong possibility you will change your mind or will will like something better.
Plus-have you seen these invites in person? We saw a ton of invites we liked online and then seeing them in an invitation store we were very surprised by what we saw..

yeah these in particular i ordered a sample to see them. it's mostly because of the layout & die cut why i love these along with the color scheme.
i've checked out a few retailers in nyc so far and their prices are still higher than the sale price that they are running.
i am still unsure if i should order them so early. i'd really love the save the $$...that's $150 i can use for a nice dinner on our honeymoon!!!!
to be continued !

Re: Need opinons re: ordering invites VERY early because of sale?
I took advantage of a sale for my invites and ordered them in early April for my November wedding. Granted the months were in the same year, but it was still fairly early. Family and friends made fun of me, that I was ordering too early, and what if this, what if that. Well, the joke's on them because there were major printing obstacles and I didn't receive them until early September, about a week before I planned to send them out.
So, if you want to buy them early, I say go for it.

IMO 10% seems to be the standard 'discount' when ordering on line. . . seems like there is almost always 10 off sale so I might just wait. . you never know what will happen in terms of time/ location etc. . . and often you can find the same invite in many places but if you will be really upset if you don't get that exact one I'd do it!

I completely agree!
On a side note, Checkerboard Invites was great to work with, I got my e-party invites from them, they came so fast!!
