Need passover help...as usual

Need passover help...as usual

Ok...I think tis should be fine..but sometimes what you can and can't eat on passover baffles me (FH's family is ashkenazi)

If I make soup with some of hte following ingredients, just let me know if this is ok

Manischewitz soup seasoning (this says kosher for passover and parve)
potatos
turnips
carrots
celery
spinach
assorted herbs (parsley etc)..
garlic
onions
And I have to use olive oil, NOT corn oil, right?

is there anything else I can include? and what can't I include? I know beans, rice, pasta, corn, and lentils are out.

Not that I would use them but are peas ok?

I am seriously baffled. Like the nost using anything with corn syrup thing but you CAN eat matzoah cake...it totally confuses me. And I don't want to bring anything that people can't eat.

I just came from Barnes and Noble, they do have Passover cookbooks many of which use Matzo meal as substitutes for those forbidden ingredients.

Do remember one thing though. If your FH's family is truly kosher, then you would have to use utensils and pots/pans that are either new or specifically set aside for Passover so they are 'chametz free'. You could have the food blessed up the wazoo by the holiest of Rabbi's but if the pan you use isnt kosher, it's useless. I suggest foil pans. and your oven has to be kosher too.

All the ingredients you listed are fine. Peas are not Kosher for Passover. I know it's really confusing. I actually had to look up the peas b/c I couldn't remember and I don't like peas, so it doesn't phase me.

Here's a link to an article that describes what is and isn't Kosher for Pesach.

His family isn't kosher AT ALL>.they LOVE bacon cheeseburgers...his cousins go a little crazy on passover (I don't know why)..but I don't think they use separate pans. I'll ask to be sure though..that's a good point.

LOL...This is our first Pesach not living with our parents or in a college dorm, and I'm totally freaked out by how much there is to do.

This is why I am not making the transformation into being a 'good Jew' until AFTER we get married. Too much pressure.

I think Jenn is trying to make a veggie soup, since she doesn't eat meat.

Re: Need passover help...as usual

I'm a vegetarian,so no chicken. I'm trying to make something I can eat,a nd so can everyone else. I happen to be pretty good at soup..so I figured a vegan (parve) vegetable soup would be good. They usually make their own chicken matzoh ball soup....I was gonna try to maybe make matzoh balls. FH's family usually buys them premade, and I found out the hard way that they had chicken in them, so I'm gonna try to make them from scratch if I make them at all.

Passover is not easy on vegetarians!

I cannot imagine it would be! Brad and I were out shopping for passover pots and pans today and trying to figure out what we needed based on what we would be cooking all week. It was pretty much, meat, meat, and more meat! Just be glad you're not keeping passover all week!

Re: Need passover help...as usual

Anyway, I feel like not cooking anything....plus how do you transport soup? It's so hard b/c there's NEVER anything for me to eat. I tried to bring a meal with me, that was forzen, but it had corn meal or corn oil in it, so that was a big no no apparently.

And then there was that famous matzoh ball soup that made me sick..and I want to try to cook something so I'll be contributing and also I'll have something to eat.

I made a really good potato cheedar chowder, and I figured I culd subsitute margarine for butter, but then I realized that soy cheese won't work, b/c soy is a bean. It's so complicated..oh and also margarine cna have corn oil, too?

Re: Need passover help...as usual

Transport the soup in the pot, or in take out containers...transport it cold, and they can heat it up there.

Yeah, you would need special kosher for passover margarine. Basically, everything we buy for passover is certified Kosher for Passover...it's a pain!

I'm excited though..apparently there's this huge kosher supermarket in lawrence. At this point, it's selling all passover stuff, so we're going shopping there next week!

ugh..LIW ate my entry!

It's not so bad any time other than the seder because that's the only time Doug's family ever cares about the milk/meat rule at all.if I can have dairy it's really fine. Actualy I found out from a conservative rabbi that some people at the table eat meat, others can eat dairy if you make a demarcation with a placemat or something...but Doug's crazy cousin(who is kosher ONLY during passover) doesn't like to make my life a little easier.

I may keep passover with Doug this year, to encourage him to keep it. With dairy I can make my famous soup, and I can have cheese and matzoh and matzoh pizza.., stuff like that. It's really confusing because you can have matzoh CAKE but not corn oil....i mean the matzoh cake rises...oil is oil...It's so much more confusing that it seems on the surface. But Doug an I have already agreed our household is going to be more toward the sephardic style. If it doesn't rise, it's good for passover....so corn and soy stuff would definitely be ok...but for the seder we have to follow the family rules.
