Need to out do last family wedding! Need a hall!

Original post by LuckyMe

Weddings in our families always leave someone to make comments and be judgemental(my future mother-in-law) We are still looking for the perfect hall without having to go into hock! Planning a May 2006 wedding. Please give us any suggestions you might have we already looked at a few and were not impressed at all for the money they were asking. Sans Souci--gorgeous view but very old in a run down way. Woodbury country club:turned off when we pulled in not very appealing, Swan Club: drove by and didn't care for the surroundings. As you can see Im real picky but willing to take suggestions. Went to wedding at Floral Terrace and although I didn't care for it being right on the street the wedding was unbelievable! Went to a wedding at Fox Hollow and although the outside was beautiful the room the reception was in was horrible, the food was horrible.

its not finished yet but it's going to be beautiful....the Hamlet at Willow Creek. Its in Mt Sinai. It overlooks the 9th hole with a huge lake and from what I just heard they are adding waterfalls.

I just wanted to bring up the fact that there are going to be some people that hate place X and some that love place X. YOU and your FH should look at everything.

I just wanted to add that 'blasting' any hall, etc. can be hurtful to those getting married there.

Thanks Jenn!

We had the winery to ourselves all day and we had our ceremony and reception at the site. It was definitely unique and absolutely beautiful, if you're looking to do something out of the ordinary. I absolutely loved Wolffer, but it is definitely suited for small weddings. (We had about 90 guests). It was peaceful and gorgeous..and of course, great wine

Just wondering...why do you have to 'out do' the last family wedding? Isn't the day about you and FH getting married? Not a contest to see who can throw a better party? Don't take it the wrong way...I'm just surprised at the post line.

Not trying to out do the last wedding really, lol
I explained in earlier posts. I have a mother in law that picks apart the nicest of events and Im just looking for a place were here picking apart will be minimal. She has a way of getting into your head to make you second guess everything and the last family wedding was absolutly fabulous and she made everyone miserable. So it's not exactly literal. Just like every other bride you want your wedding to be the one everyone remembers. You'd really have to know both sides of our families to understand.

Sounds great but we have alot of older family members, hence the crankiness so that's a little to far for them to travel. We did think about it though and can only imagine how beautiful it must have been.

Ooooh OK...well I'll second the Harbor Club in Huntington then. That was the best wedding I ever went to! We aren't having ours there because obviously we were just there for one...and its all the same friends.

We got married may 30th of this year at the watermill. We had cocktail hour outside and the reception inside for 150 people. We had the downstairs room. We had no problems with them at all. There was also another wedding going on and you didnt even know it. each reception room has there own bridal suite and guest bathroom.
I also recommend Flowerfield. It is in St. James. My fsl is getting married there, the place is beautiful. Their food is delious.
Their is also Atlantica which i never have been to but looks absoultly beautiful in pictures, it is right on the beach.

The Harbor Club is nice but I think John Anthony's in Babylon is a lot nicer. They also have a beautiful view.

Good Luck!

I noticed East Wind hasn't been suggested. It is beautiful and not too expensive. . . . But, check out East Wind. They pride themselves on good service and an elegant atmosphere. good luck with whatever you choose.

I agree! I was just about to post that. OMG, I can't wait to have our reception there!!

I can also recommend Villa's. Always a great pick!

Re: Need to out do last family wedding! Need a hall!

Well except for one place I haven't heard any real negative things so I guess I'll be checking out alot of place because everyone has made them sound so great! We've been real busy so we haven't been anywhere but Sans Souci. I've also ruled out a few others from either going to weddings there or driving through. I want the outside to be just as appealing as the inside. Alot of these halls could really use some work done. My other big thing is getting a peak at the rooms when they are set up or even when a wedding is going on. There was one hall I worked at when I was a kid and they would actually take the couple on a tour of the kitchen and through the kitchen doors into the rooms to get a peak at the wedding going on. Now it doesn't seem like halls are too open to you being around to see the way they actually do things!

I had my wedding at Villa Lombardi's last August. It was amazing, food, staff and grounds. My guests had a blast and are still talking about villa's

Went EVERYWHERE (excpet Manhattan) especially Queens and Nassau nothing really grabbed me where more than one wedding was going on!

Visit Giorgios it's the most beautiful and has the best foodl by far, or my runner up Flower Fields in St. James!

Re: Need to out do last family wedding! Need a hall!

I went to many different places and have been to many different weddings in the past few years. I personally think that a wedding is something to share between you and your loved ones and your friends. You can get married at the Waldorf or at Oheka and things can go wrong. You can go and get married at a place that it is not too expensive and things can go wrong as well. And the viceversa can happen as well. I also feel that if you are trying to please everyone for your wedding....as the planning gets going, you will find that this will be impossible and that the only two people that need to be happy are you and your FH. Your FMIL will always have something to say if she is the kind of person who is always looking at the negative side of things instead of the positive and the beautiful side of what a wedding means. It is in my opinion beyond the $$$, the place, the flowers etc...but rather the two people that are making a promise to each other to love and stay true to each other. In Life this is far more important when you are sharing your life with someone.
I think you ought to sit down and think what it is that you are looking for and what kind of ambiance you are trying to create and share as a couple. In my opinion, that should be the only thing that after all matters. Please share more what you are looking for and how much you are willing to spend and I'm quite sure we will all be able to help with suggestions. Everyone has different tastes, preferences..but what matters at the end is that you and Your FH are happy with the decision that you both make. Good Luck on your search. Keep us posted...we'd love to know where you will have the wedding of your dreams...even if it doesn't live to the standard of your FMIL and others. And you are a newbie so we always think of especially with IP address like yours.....
Good Luck !!!
