Need to vent! Not meant to start controversy!!

Original post by nycchic_24

This may not be a popular subject but I HAVE TO VENT!

I just came back from the supermarket and basically had to count my money so carefully cause we are watching our budget. So I shop for sales, get no name brand items and the like and get on line with my few things.

I am behind not one but two mothers, one of which has 3 kids and the other one has 5!!!!!! And how are they paying??? Food stamps!!!!!!!!! And what are they buying??? All of the most expensive items, meats galore, not cheapy cereal but the cereal that costs like 5 dollars a box and it just annoyed me soooooo much!!!

Then to top it off they start talking to each other and saying this is the way to go and crap like that. One of them even said, I havent worked a day in my life..the more kids you got, the more they give you!

And there I am, a working woman with a working husband struggling to make ends meet while half my pay check is going to these people. I understand if you need the help, really need it, but people like this make me sick!!!!!!!!

I soooo needed to just get that out!

It doesnt matter how many kids the benefits the same now. But, they are eligible for Sec 8 housing in any community.

They recieve full medical benefits at no cost, phone bills is paid and various other utilities.

Food stamps can only be used on food and not paper products. Although wic is in place to help them with baby food, pampers etc.

So **** why not.

I'm 99% certain that there's a 5 year lifetime cap on public assistance, but I believe that it applies only to the federal assistance, and not for the children. For example, a parent may no longer be eligible for certain types of public assistance, but as long as there are minors in the home, the children remain eligible. Of course, the money goes to the parents anyway, so that's where the continuous flow of money comes from.

..and the continuous flow of children.

Exactly, that's why the baby factories are ALWAYS open! That' s their way of making money!

That's true, however, like I said, the majority of people on public assistance do NOT abuse the system. It's always a case of the rotten apples spoiling the barrel.

Look at it this way, if it costs you a litte out of your pocket to keep opportunities open for you. Then hey, they dont realize that they are actually hurting themselves.

I am sure there are people out there who need and use the system the way that its meant to be..but as for the majority..i dont have stats or anything but I tend to disagree. I am sure it is all a matter of where you come from and what you see as well.

I know in my neighborhood, I can count on one hand the amount of people on welfare who really need it and use it properly. I disagree with the majority statement.

All I know when I was growing up in my neighborhood the Majority of ppl who were on Welfare were sitting at home on their a$$es and having kid after kid. Riding a Benz with gold chains around their neck. Meanwhile both my parents were working hard and struggling to put food on our table and we could barely get lunch tickets for school.

Ok IMO.. And this is my opinion.. Women who do not have a job and have a child and are on welfare should have to go and get their tubes tied so they do not have anymore children.. And why do they get more of my hard earned money everytime they have another kid... There should be some guidelines to this whole system which st*inks!!!. I hate the fact that i have to clip coupons and watch EVERY penny i spend. I think we should start a petition and et this system reformed!!!

and by the way.. the way we are going today all the money we put into Social security will be gone by the year 2012!!!!( this was my major in college)

There are very few people on public assistance that are using it for the right reasons. I have no problem with someone collecting if they are disabled or layed off and need help for a few months BUT I have seen and unfortunately are related to a few deadbeats that abuse the system. They sit on their tush all day and watch tv and have the goverment give them money for food, utilities, housing. Why can't they work when the kids are in school??? I beleive it should be mandatory that everyone on welfare work. Even if its parttime or volunteer for the state and then have the government subsidize the rest. There is no reason for anyone that is able bodied (barring special circumstances) to sit home all day and do nothing while the rest of us work our butts off to pay for their food.

And the sad part is that these people on welfare and assistance will most likely be in a house before me because I'm a moron who works for a living and can't afford to save for a down payment.

UGH

You know and the govt turns a blind eye. There are generations on Public Assistance, you mean no one in your family was ever able to get a job. Please

My family immigrated here in 1970 with no money, no education and definitley no job. During that time there were organizations in Blkyn where my parents lived who helped place you on public assistance

My parent never went on, my mom worked in a sweat shop and my dad worked as a masonary for construction. They rarely had extra money but they raised 2 kids, were able to own a home, and never asked a soul for anything.

I think welfare should be like unemployment. One year and that is it. I don't mind assisting people who NEED it but people who don't feel like working. GIVE ME MY MONEY BACK! I would have rammed my cart into hers!

I think it is very unfortunate that some people who are abusing the system have lead some of the ladies here to advocate for some of the solutions that I have seen.

It is possible that we haven't come across every single woman who is receiving some benefit from the government. It is also possible that not all people who are receiving benefits talk about it in supermarkets, so its not public knowledge.

My family received some state benefits like lunch tickets, milk tickets, etc. when I was a child. I am not really sure if my parents received anything else. I am one of seven children. My parents are VERY religious and would not have used birth control. I do not think that my mother should have been forced to have her tubes tied Daycare is not easy. There was no way my parents could afford daycare for seven kids, so my mother did not work. It sounds like some people around here would want to crucify her for daring not to work.

Maybe part of the reason that I would rather starve during my school day than use a lunch ticket to buy lunch is the fear of being judged as harshly as some of you are judging people that you don't know.

i have seen with my own eyes whole communties who are on state aid with the nail, and hair done all the time. they drive a better car then me, so how is that fair? i bust my buns to drive a 1994 with over 100k with oil leaking and they are driving a 2002 almost new mercedes or what ever! i scrimp and save every penny and was even out of work for 11 weeks, but that still does not change the fact that many families keep having kids to keep getting $$.

my family was also on food stamps and my mom was a single mother with no support from my father, yet she still found a way to get us off of assistance and have a decent life.

Becky...I sympathize with the situation of most people that are in these situations...but I think maybe a better monitoring ssytem...would help the people who really need it...
