We are thinking of buying something small to start off with if we can get a mortgage...

It's all really a matter of what you want and what you can afford, IMO.

When FH and I were looking in PA, we discovered it was about the same to build as it was to buy. So we decided that having a house that was made for us and the way we live would be money better spent.

Depending on where your looking to move , check the taxes! If you buy a home already built and then expand it when you have the time /money the taxes are usually less. I live in the same area as several friends who have new homes built there taxes are from 10,000.-14,000. per year on a new home. Mine are 6,500.00 on an older house.
If you go with an older home , have it checked out for and let the inspector or whoever know you plan on expanding in the future .They will let you know what type of work your in for and if the house is structurly(sp) sound to do it.
Good Luck!

It all depends on WHERE you want to live.
