So DH and I got a new puppy to go with our new apartment!
I am just curious if anyone has experience in training puppies. Artie, that's his name! , is a 5 month old beagle, and we are trying to house break him. DH and I hate the idea of putting him in a cage, but we keep hearing that its just the best thing for him. He keeps pooping and peeing on the carpet, he will go outside when we take him, but hes still young and doesn't understand yet obviously.
Does anyone have any tips they can give me?? I could use all the help I can get right now haha.
have u used wee-wee pads. I've heard that using a cage is good too but i couldn't do it with my dog. We put a gate and let him stay in the kitchen so at least when he went it wasn't on the carpet or wood floors.
Also, when he does go outside (even if he doesn't really go but just leaves his scent) when he comes in give him a treat. Although this could backfire when he's older lol. I really believe that my dog goes outside, sits there for about 2 min, w/o doing his business, then comes back in just for a treat.

I was thinking about the wee wee pads, but the pet store gave us this spray, it smells like it has amonia in it , so I guess he thinks he peed in that spot last and will go again. We spray that on the ground outside, and we have sprayed it on a piece of cardboard box that we have in the cage, and he still doesn't go in the cage or outside near the spray lol
Whenever he does go outside we praise him and try to give him a treat, but he wont eat it.
We have him in the kitchen during the day time b/c he can run back and forth and there is alot of room. It is wood floors, but I think its better than having him stay on a carpeted floor. Maybe we should keep him in the kitchen at night too???
It's just a pain, b/c the living room and kitchen are in the same room, and we block off the 2 entrances to the living room so he can't go and pee on the sofas or w/e. I justh ate having to baracade the room every day. DH said he found some stuff online that we can try with him, but I just figured maybe I can ask around here as well.
Thank you!

Most likely he will NOT go in his cage if he sleeps in there. Dogs like to do their business as far from their beds as they can.
Our puppy is 6 months old and we've had her since she was about 10 weeks old. She's a yorkie and TINY so we use weeweepads. She started using them from like day 2 that we had her.
I would try them..and then everytime he uses it, praise him alot. Keep moving it closer to the door you will be taking him out of. Eventually it will be outside. This is the advice I've gotten. Also, if he goes in the house...you can only scold him if you catch him in the act. If you scold him after...he will have no idea what you are mad at him for.
Good Luck!

Congrats. He is ADORABLE!!! Crates are super effective for house breaking, you just have to take them outside every 2 hours. How anyone who works can do that-is beyond me.
I had a tough time with my pup and was shocked when she finally got it. Trust that they he will get it.
Treats really work, carry treats when you walk him- something chewy- cheese, pieces of turkey or ham. As SOON as he goes outside, praise and treat immediately. He will connect getting rewarded with going outside.
Be paitent and enjoy this, you'll look back and laugh at the grief he put you through.

Re: new puppy!
when we got our puppy we bought an exercise pen and set it up in our living room. We also have wood floors so we bought a piece of linoleum at home depot to fit under the pen. It saved our floors! When we were home we'd let her out of the pen but when we were at work she'd have to stay penned up with her wee wee pad. The first 2 months were not fun but it got much better. You have to watch her like a hawk. Anytime you see her crouching to go to the bathroom you have to yell at them, say NO and carry her over to the wee wee pad. They'll eventually get the idea. Praise them like crazy when they do go on the wee wee pad, keep snacks handy or in our case boiled chicken did the trick. If you have any other questions feel free to FM me.

If your dog doesn't take to the crate like mine did- we bougth a play area that can be made small to bigger which will teach them not to go where they sleep and it is a little better then a crate. Also, how often are you taking him out. He might smell the scent on the carpet which is why he keeps going there.

Re: new puppy!
Yeah, we bought this spray that is supposed to eliminate any odor from him peeing or pooping on the rug. This way he doesn't keep going back, but he sort of does. I am thinking about the pen, but he can jump over the gates that we got him, so I don't know about the playpen , unless it is really tall and wont tip over from him jumping up onto the sides of it.
I agree about not scolding him afterwards, DH was telling me to bring him to the spot and tell him no, but he doesn't know what that means so I will scold him only when I see him doing it.
I also don't clean it up in front of him, I take him out of the room. I read about that somewhere.
We may just get a pen and keep him in that, with a piece of something underneath so he doesn't ruin the wood floors.
Thank you all for your help, I really appreciate it :)

He actually pooped and vomited the night we brought him home. We woke up the next morning and DH said that he was covered in his own poo and vomit. I felt bad for the dog, but I don't think he got that if he did that in there, he would still have to stay in there. Then again DH let him out to clean him and the cage up, so he didn't really get to 'stay' in the cage so maybe that is another reason.

Re: new puppy!
We are dog LOVERS (our deal was, I got a new car, FH can get a Great Dane puppy -- yes a freaking GREAT DANE!! OY VEH!!!) We already have a chocolate lab and our landlords have 2 standard poodles that come and visit our apt all the time.
5 months might be a little old to start crate training him, though that really is the BEST way to break in a puppy. They actually really learn to love it; it becomes their little home. (I dated a vet for a while, so this is not just me making assumptions). I would talk to your vet and see what they say. The sooner you start training him the better. BTW I love beagles, they're adorable and they have a great demeanor. Good luck with your new little guy!

Re: new puppy!
Congrats on your new puppy...I know how exciting it is!!! But I also know what a headache they can be
my girl is 3 yrs old...and she still goes in the house once in a while why???? DH and I have problems bc of this...I don't know what's wrong with her. I used to live in a home and she would go outside, but now living in apt 17 floors up high, I have her go on peewee pads in the balcony. My boy does it and she does..most of the time, but some time she just choses to do it inside, while the door to the balcony is open...don't worry the balcony is safe...lol I would love to give you advice but I can't even control my 3yr old POM

Congrats on your new puppy!! So adorable!!!
When we first got our dog, we used wee wee pads in the house for when she was out of her crate just in case she really needed to go...I would also take her out whenever i thought she needed to use the bathroom (about 30 minutes after a meal) and put her in the same spot outside for her to do her business...As she got older i taught her how to come and get me to take her outside. When we werent home we left her in her crate so she could learn how to 'hold it'. Also if she was having an accident we would grab her and run her outside...I dont know how good it was to do that to her, but it seemed to do the trick (it didnt help we would have a trail of pee to the front door...)

Re: new puppy!
No judgements....but if you got your pup at a pet shop, crate training wont work because they are used to going in their crates since they don't go out on a regular basis.

Re: new puppy!
they sell the pens with different sized gates. Your dog should have no problem staying in it all day. Lead your dog into the pen and then give them treats when they go in and praise them like crazy. They'll love to learn the pen. Our dog stays in a crate overnight but the pen during the day.

Re: new puppy!
I appreciate all this feedback girls!
I know that with him being so old that it may be hard to break him, but I think if we stay consistent and keep at it, he will eventually get the idea that this is how it will be from now on! lol
The vet also told us that whatever works for us , cage wise , will be fine. I told him we keep him in the kitchen and he is fine, he said that if that works then just leave it be. I just want to eventually leave him alone in the house w/out the gates and not have him tear up our new couch :)

Re: new puppy!
Hi, congratulations!
I have four shih tzu's. They are 5, 3, 2, and 2 years old. I have trained my dogs and other friends and family dogs aswell. There are different ways for different people. I've tried crate training but only with the dogs that didn't mind being in the crate. The constant barking can be very annoying and heartbreaking. If you have a family member that is always home or if you can take off from work the crate can work very quickly. Pretty much you put the puppy in their with some toys and some treats so he can feel at home. Oh and a comfy bed. About every 2-3 hours you take him outside and stay there until he goes. You can also take the puppy to use the wee wee pad in the house but you have to keep your eye out for signs that he might go. Place him on the pad and if he moves away just pick him up again and keep placing him there until he goes on it. It's tedious but it works. Then always praise when he goes, and while he is doing his business you can say things like 'go potty'. Eventually they learn that that is what they are supposed to do when they go to the wee-wee pad or outside. You can also take the water away after the last walk at night. Pretty much after 9pm and they knock out till the next morning. They usually always potty 10-15 min after they eat and after their nap. If you want to try keeping him in a small area like the kitchen or a hallway. I would suggest placing a wee wee pads or newspaper all over but the sleeping area toys, bed and water. Feed on a schedule. Make sure he doesn't sleep on the wee wee pad. Then every week decrease the amount of newspaper you put on the space. He will eventually learn to just go on one sheet of newspaper. I think this way takes a lot longer for the puppy to learn. I have other ways that I have tried cause every dog is also different but I have written way too much. So FM if you would like more info....hope this helps!
Oh yeah, one time I had to bring the crate in the bedroom with me so the puppy wouldn't feel alone and stopped barking. I literally got up every 3 hours and took him outside or the wee wee pad. I know it sounds crazy but in the long run it all works out for the best!
