new puppy!

Original post by SFAR89

So DH and I got a new puppy to go with our new apartment!

I am just curious if anyone has experience in training puppies. Artie, that's his name! , is a 5 month old beagle, and we are trying to house break him. DH and I hate the idea of putting him in a cage, but we keep hearing that its just the best thing for him. He keeps pooping and peeing on the carpet, he will go outside when we take him, but hes still young and doesn't understand yet obviously.

Does anyone have any tips they can give me?? I could use all the help I can get right now haha.

Thanks !

Re: new puppy!

I have a 1yr old puppy who is a handful so I understand the jumping the gates...we could not confine Bailey for anything he would get out no matter what I have never seen a puppy with so much determination lol he has a one track mind. Any way what we did was started with the wee wee pads but I dont reccomend that unless that is where you wan t him to go all the time, because they get used to going there and then you have to retrain them all over again to NOT go where they have been going all along trust me it was a pain.......we started the no weewee pads in April and he still has the occasional accident but the way I look at it is it comes with ahving a puppy right??? lol

we did decide to crate Bailey because I can not trust him yet to hold it all day while we are at work so in the crate HE WILL NOT GO EVER (I do agree with the girl who said if he came from a store where he was kept in a crate the crate training will not work) Now my weird dog does not bark when he has to go out so I am subjected to watching him like a hawk and eventually you will be able to tell when they have to go out. take him out every 2 hours and give lots of praise dont worry if he wont take the treat Bailey never did either exp outside but noe he comes in and walks right into the kitchen and stands there like hello can I have my treat now lol..

The biggest piece of advice I can give u is have ALOT of PATIENCE it is a long process training a puppy and can get VERY frustrating just keep your cool and he will eventually get it also only scold him if u catch him in the act then take him right out side even if he already went thatseems to work for me. GOOD LUCK SWEETIE fm me if you need anything else....I also have a great dog trainer who does puppy kindergarten for like $15 a class let me know if you want her #

Thank you so so so much. I really appreciate all the advice everyone has given me.

I will let you know if we decide to go with the dog tranier. I just know that it will take a while and we have to have patience with the puppy. I am prepared for that, I just want to start him on the right track with the housebreaking. :)

I will remember all of this and deff start to take him out every 2 hours when I get home and before I go to work. I will also remember to take him outside as soon as he goes on the floor/carpet. I know he will get it eventually :)

thanks everyone! I feel alot better now lol

Re: new puppy!

Congrats on your new puppy!!! I also have a beagle I love him!!!! But back then, ohhhh boy was he a pain in the a$$!!!!!!! We would walk him for like 40 mins and he would come in the house and pee I would use a cage 100%!!! We used to feel bad and that was our problem... when we would go to work, we put up a baby gate and thats where he stayed...... and thats where he pooped and peed- EVERYDAY!!!!!!!!!! It was so annoying to come home and have to mop and clean... I would dread getting home before FH for that reason lol.... FH finally got annoyed and we started keeping him in his cage (this is where he slept EVERY NIGHT). I would def. keep him in a cage to sleep and to keep them there while you are not home. At that age, our beagle was ripping into anything and everything that had cotton in it. I would keep your beagle in the cage, and then taken out to pee/poop and then play time (supervised of course) and then after a bit, back in the cage he goes. If he doesnt pee/poop, he goes back into the cage.... so eventually he can realize if he pees/poops its playtime. Also, I would give your beagle a treat EVERYTIME he pees/poops outside. He'll always want to go to the bathroom in order to get a treat. Our beagle got it after a while and would look at us IMMEDIATELY after going to the bathroom like saying 'Can I have my treat now?' LOL!!! Wow sorry so long....hope I helped!

Re: new puppy!

I really like using a crate for house breaking. As sad as it may seem for us to crate them, dogs eventually consider it their home and will go into the crate willingly. It becomes sort of like a 'safe place'. If he crys at night in his crate you can try letting him sleep with a tshirt that you or FH have worn that has your scent on it. IMO weewee pads dont actually housebreak dogs-they just go in the house but on a pad. I used to work at a clinic with a girl who used weewee pads-anytime her dogs saw anything that looked like one, they pooped and peed.
Get Artie used to a crate and a schedule and find some treats he adores. And make a really really big deal of it when he goes potty outside. I did this any my dog was trained in 1 week.

Re: new puppy!

Thanks for more info! I left him in the cage last night in the living room, (this is the area where he is kept during the daytime as well) but I covered the cage with a big towel, he didn't cry after we closed the door, and he didn't cry when we left the room. We also didn't hear him cry or bark when we went to bed, so I think he had a good night. Plus he didn't pee or poop anywhere!

This morning I left the cage open so he could go in if he wanted to and get used to it. I also left my t-shirt that I slept in , on his other bed that is in the kitchen so he can have that as well.

I think all of this advice is starting to work. It may just be wishful thinking b/c he is still a puppy lol But hopefully he will start to understand it all.

Such great advice from you girls. I knew I could count on you guys :)

Re: new puppy!

congrats on your new puppy!!!! he's adorable! my puppy is almost 5 months old now and we've had him since 10 weeks. He learned pretty quickly that it is not okay to go in the house anywhere that there is no weeweepad. BUTTTT BEWARE, since my house is all hardwood floors he confuses rugs with weewee pads and it's been really tough training him not to go on rugs when they sort of look like weewee pads.

With respect to #2, somehow (dont ask me how) we trained him to go to the door and put his hand to the door when he wants to go. i think it was a freak accident that he did it one day and we praised him and after that he's been doing it since...we love it lol

Also, he knows MANY MANY tricks....we learned everything from 'its me or the dog' on animal planet. it's the best show and we follow Victoria's advice religiously.

We crate trained him until he was about 3 months old but by then he knew not to go on the hardwood floor so now he sleeps on his bed next to our bed and if he has to pee in the middle of the night he just walks over to the weewee pad.
