New York Traffic!

Original post by Georgia16

My wedding is July 3rd 2005 in New Rochelle. I live in Queens, right by the whitestone bridge. Anyhow, it was pointed out to me today that there maybe a tremendous amount of traffic on that day due to the holiday. All of my guests will have to go over the bridge and all of us new yorkers know what that is like on holidays. Any ideas, suggestions or advice? Or possibly some words to calm me down.

I dont think you have to worry about the traffic too much - hoepefully everyone will be at their vacation spots already... The traffic to LI will probably be worse -

One a side note - my name is Georgia and I am Greek too

Where did you go to school? (i live in astoria - dont most greeks - *lol*)

ETA: You are getting married at the same church and the same hall as my brother!! He is getting married in Nov and his fiance's name is also Georgia!! *lol*

Hey Georgia, I went to bryant High School. I grew up in Astoria, on 35th street and broadway. My family recently made the 'Greek' move to whitestone. I'll tell you the parking is awsome out here.
Where did you go to school? and where in Astoria are you?

Hey - I live a block from Athens Cafe (convenient location when i was in HS and college) however parking around my house royally sucks!! I cant wait to move to the Bay Terrace area to have no parking issues.

I went to LIC for one year and then to Bronx Science for the remainder.

My parents have vowed never to leave Astoria - *lol*

ETA: How did you choose the church you are getting married at?

That is soo cool I just read the brother comment. Wow too many Georgia's. Well I really dont know much about the church, it was highly recommended to me by one of my fellow Greek coworkers. Maybe you can fill me in. I spoke with the priest, father Elias via internet (lol, ahh.. technology) he seemed really nice. I made an appointment to meet with him but after the holidays. Have you been there before? What is your opinion? Where are you getting married St. Demetrios? That was my church for sooo many years. I miss St. D's. I still go there for the Anastasi.

That is my brother's fiance's church. She really likes teh church and priest - i htink that is the same priest - i'll get more info from her - i've never been there before- In november i can give you a full review *lol* - A friend of mine is acutally getting married at the church and the surf club in Feb - so two reviews *lol*

Yeah i'm getting married at St. D's. - I think it is so pretty. I just dont like that I dont know all of the priests anymore - Fr. John is probably going to be our priest.

He was the priest for my cousin. The church is beautiful inside and the outside is great too. My cousins photographer sucked, when he took the pics the train showed in the back. But they really fixed the place up and the inside looks amazing in pictures.
You and your FI look very familiar. What part of Greece are you from? Are you both from Astoria? I cant wait to hear reviews. I really need more info on the church.

I'm from Drosia (its a suburb of Athens near Kifisia) and my FH is from Xios. What part of greece are you from?

He isnt from Astoria - he lives in Flushing and went to St .Francis Prep for HS. We usually hang out in Astoria: cavo, athens, remi - so we might have seen each other before -

I'll definitely ask my FSIL for info on the church for you.

Oh, which band are you using (if you are having one) ?

I am from Kefalonia and FI is 100% Sicilian. It is soo funny to see the similarities among our families. Anyhow, I guess maybe we have seen each other in one of those places. We have not yet booked a band. This will be difficult for us. We want to play English, Greek and Italian. Not sure how that is going to work but we are starting to look. I really dont want a dj. I think it looks better to have a band. Maybe we will have to do both. Who knows this is hard stuff!

We are doing a band and a DJ. I love bands - but i'd rather have a really good greek band and have the english done by the DJ.

We booked Fantasia. We would have loved to book Powerstation but they were just too much money becuase FH and I are paying for the wedding.

ETA: THere is a greek bride thread on teh 2004 board.

My sister got married in May and she had the acoustics. I may have spelled it wrong. They were great. Ive heard of all three. I may have even heard them all and not known. Who is your DJ? Do they provide a DJ or is that seperate?
I know it is pricy, are you paying for the ntire wedding on your own?

Re: New York Traffic!

We are going to have Bravo Sounds as our DJ. We arent going to have a separate MC though because we don tthink we need one - we arent having the bridal party annoinced and we arent going to have the garter and bouquet toss, nor are we announcing teh cake cutting - so there is no point in really having a separate announcer - We've heard Bravo sounds on two separate weddings and we really like them. We got a deal by booking them through Fantasia so we got them for $800.

We are paying for the entire wedding on our own - it is so stressful -FH and i never fought abotu money issues and lately we've just gotten into the stupidest arguments.

Hi Georgia.. I am 100% Italian and FH is Greek... total opposite of you guys. We were trying to find a band that plays all three languages, but it was somewhat difficult. We went with oasisnj.com which plays American/Italian. We are contemplating on whether we should hire a three piece Greek band or if we should just make up a CD with Greek music for the band to play. We are undecided.

P.S. Our families are very similar too. We spent last summer in Italy (where we got engaged) with my family and then we went to Greece to stay with his. The only difference for me was the language. Other than that, when I was in Greece, I felt like I was in Italy.

Georgia that is very difficult. Good Luck Im sure everyone gets into those stupid litlle arguments. Well keep me posted on the church.

Hey Rosanne, are you getting married in Holy Cross in whitestone? Are you almost done with planning? What has been the most difficult so far?
WinterBride2005 Posted:

Re: New York Traffic!

Holy Cross in Bayridge, Brooklyn. We are getting married first at my church (Catholic) and then the Greek Orthodox.

So far, we've booked everything. It hasn't been bad at all. It's been pretty easy. The only thing I think will be difficult is finding a place to live. We so want to buy something, but prices or rediculous.

July 3rd is sunday and most people have off from work on monday so I really think you should be fine. most people are going to be at the beach or where they are going to be by sunday. you may just have to deal with people day-tripping to the beach. Don't worry!

Where in New Rochelle?

Do you live in the area? If not you can FM me the places and maybe I can help you figure out alternate routes to get there? I'm sure other girls from that area can too.
