Newly Engaged - Need Help Finding a Venue!

Original post by ikcin98

Hi All,

I've been on this website and reading many many posts since I got engaged. We only got engaged a little over a week ago, but I've been in search of the perfect place to have the ceremony and reception!

Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated!

I would love to avoid the traditional catering hall type wedding. I've been to many beautiful weddings at different venues like this, but I want mine to be a bit different and a bit more casual.

Places I've gone so far...

Old Field Club - I had my heart set on this venue. I thought it would be perfect...the outside space and the room looked perfect, but I really didn't love it. There were a few things that didn't thrill me, so I left very disappointed. I was convinced there was nowhere for me to get married that I'd love.

Then we went to see the Vanderbilt at Dowling. My fiance and his parents loved it. My mom and I liked it, but I'm not totally sold. There are a few things I don't love and I don't really know if it's the atmosphere I'm going for.

Thatched Cottage - Really very pretty, but more the catering hall type feel that I want to avoid. It just wasn't for me.

I really need help! We obviously have a budget, but we're willing to do a Friday night. I have to do July or August because it makes my life much easier as a teacher. We're also willing to do '10 or '11.

I really want to find the perfect place....on the water would be great, but as long as it's a pretty locations, we're happy. Neither of us is very religious, so we will hopefully be getting married on-site or at some pretty outside location nearby (We hope for no rain...as do the rest : ) )

Thank you thank you thank you!!!

We appreciate any feedback at all!

I was recently married at Jericho Terrace, which was amazing, but as you are looking for something a little different, I would also recommend De Seversky. I used to work there, and they do beautiful weddings with delicious food. The grounds are stunning, the cocktail hour will be gorgeous, and I think your guest list is just the right size to fit into their dining room (our guest list was over 200 which made finding a hall pretty hard).

another place to check out is nictotra's ballroom in staten island. might be further than you wanted to go but it might be exactly what you were looking for. i was in the same boat as you, went to 30 different places and none of them felt right til i got to nicotra's.

Have you looked at Giorgios? It's on a golf course...but thebeach is right around the corner...so you can get great pics. Giorgio's is beautiful...only one wedding at a time...and doesnt give you the catering hall feeling at all. In addition, you work directly with the owners which is a major plus!

We looked at:

The Woodlands
De Seversky Center at NYIT
Vanderbilt at Dowling
Hamlet in Commack
The Bourne Mansion
The Royalton

We were going for the homey/mansion feel since we are having a fall wedding. We narrowed it down to the Woodlands and the Royalton. Since I wanted to incorporate dark fall colors I was concerned that the Woodlands would have wound up being too dark. My fiance and I fell in love with the Royalton because it had things that both of us were looking for. The service has been spectacular so far and they include a lot of things that other places don't. A lot of my friends are getting married this year and next year and the Royalton includes more than what my friends are getting. I also like how we can customize everything.

I like how a lot of people haven't been to the Royalton before so it will be a new experience for them. For those that have been to the Royalton, they have raved about it. A colleague went to a wedding there last year and said it was the best wedding she has ever been to.

Check out Land's End! It was my number 2 choice. One wedding at a time, right on the water. The view is amazing. The ceremony looked awesome too. You can have it facing the water or literally on the beach. So pretty!

My parents go to a fundraiser function at the Cradle of Aviation museum each year, which they say is really nice. Have you also looked into the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, Brooklyn Museum of Art, or Wave Hill (which I think may be expensive but definitely has individual character)?
