Nice wedding on the cheap?

Original post by Zola84

Hello All!

My mother has just told me she will take no part in helping out with my wedding financially (and she has enough to be a big help). Now I'm stuck because we can't afford to have a NY wedding, looking at 130 guests, and the cheapest I found was $80/pp. And then to pay for everything else (limos, flowers, dress, tux, etc) I find it near impossible with our salaries combined and living together expenses. We thought destination wedding would be great, but his family is big and really don't have a lot of money to go somewhere. I don't know what to do! Does anyone know of anywhere where the plates could possibly be cheaper, but a nice place (I spoke with Coral and it's 65/pp, but 2 of my friends went to see the place when they were wedding planning and both told me it had a sort of funny mildewy kind of smell to it).

Any suggestions of what to do? We could cut the party to 114 people, but we have a lot of family and I want to invite our closest friends.

I know you want to do your ten yr. anny but would you consider doing March? I got quotes for $65 a head for a Sat night in March. I mean they ranged from 65-85 at various places but that was without me negotiating at all. We're on a budget so we aren't going to spend more than $80 a per inc. tax and gratuity) Or, go into November.. you can probably get similar pricing in that month, I know my brother had.

When I was originally looking at venues, I got a great quote from Swan Club - def under $80pp for a Friday night. They have beautiful grounds. It could be worth considering.

Check out Leonards in Great Neck. My friend had her wedding there with ~100 guests back in April. She said it costed her ~$65 including service charges and taxes. Time of the year and day of the week really makes a difference in cost.

I am in the same dilemma as well where my FH and I aren't receiving any help from either side. Coral House was on our list during our research and I thought their package had more bang for the buck. If you like Coral House, I'd say that price was very reasonable for all the things you are getting.

I would first cut down the guest list. FH and I did this and it is saving us almost 5k.
I would also consider a day wedding off season.

I would look into some of the lessings locations. Some of their mansions are more expensive but they have some really nice country clubs that are reasonable. I look at timer point and smithtown landing ( they do the catering for both) and the quotes i got we well under 80 pp for a Saturday day wedding.

Also, if you are willing to get rid of some stuff some places may negotiate with you. I was willing to get rid of two stations at the cocktail hour and it lowered my price by 10 pp.

Good luck

Smithtown landing and Swan Club. I also wanted October, but November is definitely cheaper. This will give you a solid year and 3 months to save and get everything you want. Also, like the other ladies have said, get rid of the extras at the RH, nobody really notices, and it makes a difference budget-wise.

Apparently March is also one of the cheapest months to get married. I heard that Maestro's in the bronx is really cheap (like under $50 on a sat night cheap!). Never been, but worth a look.

When i was looking around for venues i came across some affordable places. The fox hollow gave me a quote for a friday night in March 65 pp. With tax and tip it came out to 85! its really nice. all you need to provide is your centerpieces for the table. they provide the flowers for your ceremony and all. if you book with them they give you a suite for your wedding night. Their hotel is right next door . You dont even need a limo. check it out. We were thinking of booking there but my close friend is getting married there this december. Negotiate! i did for mine...the worse they can say is no. The quote they gave us was for the winter garden room. The room is surrounded by a nice waterfall and a fireplace. For the price i thought it was excellent.

MY FH and I were in a very similar situation, same amount of guests and trying to figure a way to pay for it ourselves. I'd say if you can part with your date, look for something between Dec. and March. I originally wanted a summer wedding but we just couldn't afford it, so we booked late March.

Check out some of the following halls which I found reasonable:
Sans Souci of Sea Cliff & Stewart Manor Country Club (Both offer a winter package from Dec. -March at about $59 pp. At SMCC she told me it included any day, so sat night was same price)
Leonard's of Great Neck
Fox Hollow

Try brunch

Also see what vendors actually cost

Including my dress, RD and 115 guests, we spent about $23,000 which is pennies compared to some of the LI Weddings on here!

We scrapped extras and favors

So let me get this straight, a day Saturday wedding is cheaper than a Friday? I just assumed that all Sat weddings are expensive!

My saturday day wedding is $30 cheaper per head than the Friday night before.

You can cut down the guest list. There are plenty of places that are 45pp though they are not super fancy looking. Also do a weekday daytime wedding.

Definitely consider either (a) cutting your guest list or (2) getting married during an off season and you'll be able to do it. Check out the Riviera in Massapequa, when we were looking their prices were the most reasonable of any of the halls we looked at.

Re: Nice wedding on the cheap?

i was just at smithtown landing and windows on the lake yesterday. if you do a sunday wedding or a friday night wedding they are cheaper than a saturday. i would def suggest either an early spring or fall wedding those are cheaper as well. at both places for nov/2012 they offered $65 p/p and it works out to about $85 inclusive. in total they both came in at about $9800 for 115 ppl. also i know smithtown landing was cheaper then that for spring of 2013. smithtown landings price included a sit down dinner and windows was a buffet. if you wanted the buffet at windows it was $10 p/p more. that makes me think that smithtown landing would be cheaper for a buffet as well. im going to be going to a few other places in the next couple weeks so ill keep you updated!

Re: Nice wedding on the cheap?

west sayville country club is less than 80$ and if you get married off season most places are cheap.. I looked in timberpoint and they are like 65$ a person off season.. good luck! We had to be super careful since we arent getting any financial support from our families either.. also cut out unesscary stuff like videographer, flowers (we are just doing small centerpeices and my bouquet) save the dates, limos....

Look into country clubs they usually have packages try brentwood country club and marconi manor...both have 100 person packages for like 7 grand and then to add extra people is like 50 bucks

Def cut down the guest list thatsma big chunk of $. Also you can do a day wedding as opposed to night always cheaper, you can do a weekday wedding like thrus, fri or even sunday is cheaper than sat. Or just do a cocktail reception.

Re: Nice wedding on the cheap?

try Villa Russo in Queens. They are deaf cheaper - like in the $40's and $50's per person.

otherwise, look for halls that have packages for everything - that might be your best bet.
