I don't want small children there (like less than 7) How should I write it without offending people? Is it even Ok to write it on there? Or is that tacky? I really don't want a bunch of little kids at my wedding. Not that I don't like them, but my wedding is ending at 1:30 and I think its going to be too stressful for the parents.
TIA
edited to include:
Hey, do you think that on the RSVP card I can fill in the total number of people... like: ___ of 3 will attend (I fill in the 3)
Or is that like taboo in wedding invites?

I had this problem also. On the RSVP card I wrote 'An Ocassion for Adults Only'. I know it's not proper etiquette, but people should know better than to bring their kids to a late reception. That's what's not proper etiquette !
It *****, but I rather do that than be aggravated on my wedding day.
Yea, I've been reading around and some people say its rude to write it on the invite, but it's also rude to bring people/children that aren't invited

Re: No Children on Invite
I would think, only the people to whom the invitation is addressed, would attended the reception. As the other ladies have said, if you have any doubts, just write 'adult reception only' or something like that. I'm sure people will get the hint.

Re: No Children on Invite
I'd write 'Adult Reception to Follow'
I didn't do that and sent out my invites with only those invited on the envelope thinking that everyone would get the point and they didn't!! I can't even tell you how many freakin people responded with their children added to the response card! It made for some very uncomfortable phone calls! I wish I would have just written Adult Reception Only- it might have saved me some stress

I think the 'proper' etiquette would be to just address the invite to the ppl who are invited. I personally could NOT use proper etiquette unfortunately. I did pocketfold invites so on the reception insert i put 'adult only' when describing the reception. I know I know NOT the correct way of doing things but some ppl in our circle do not posess etiquette and common sense so we had to spell it out so there would be no misunderstanding. And even with that i have still been asked if they could bring kids
Good Luck because this is always a touchy subject but just remember it's your wedding.
Don't feel bad. At my brother's wedding they put 'Adults Only' and even told ppl that it was adults only and one of my cousins still brought not one, but TWO of his kids under 7!!!!! So rude! I'm getting around that by just not inviting him, lol!

Re: No Children on Invite
If you're having your ceremony and reception at the same place, you can write Adult Reception to Follow on the very bottom. Otherwise, put it on the reception insert. And I wouldn't specify ages. I would either have people bring their kids or not. The drama associated with having to explain 'Well so and so is 7 so he's invited but the other kid is 6 so she's not'.

Re: No Children on Invite
my cousin put ADULT ONLY RECEPTION on her invitation and the only child there was the ring bearer. I'm not sure if anyone gave her a hard time for it. I know my aunt and uncle were happy that they didn't have to bring their kids and they could have a good time.

Re: No Children on Invite
You should definitely have on the invitation 'Adult Reception to follow' and then only address the invitations to the people you want to come.
This gets tricky when you have OOT guests that have children. It's not always easy for them to drop kids with the grandparents or to hire a sitter that will stay overnight with them. If you have a lot of people that are OOT with kids that you REALLY want there, you should look into hiring an onsite babysitter.
That being said, we DID allow children at our reception and they and we had a blast with them there. They ranged in ages from 13 months to 9 y/o, and we had just about a dozen. We wouldn't have changed anything b/c they made the party even better.

Just address the envelope to whoever you are inviting. That's what we did. I only had one person ask me about their kids and to be honest I think it's because he really didn't know better.
I agree just address the envelope to who you want invited. Mr and Mrs ...... Fo not add and family.

Re: No Children on Invite
I personally did it that I put only the names of those invited on the actual invite, and then on the RSVP card I worded it as something like:
(2) seats are being reserved in your honor ___ will be attending (for them to fill out)
by doing this, I had absolutely no problems with people trying to bring kids or add extra people. By putting down exactly how many seats they have available to them, it made it quite clear.

Re: No Children on Invite
i would just write Adult Reception to Follow. This way the people who thought about bringing their kids and may have asked you will know for sure that its not cool. Addressing it to just Mr. & Mrs. is not as effective as you might think - ppl have no regard. gotta spell it out!

Re: No Children on Invite
We did not want children at our wedding either - our Friday night reception started at 7:30pm and did not end until 1:30am. It was just not a conducive environment for children.
On our reception card and response card - we had 'Adults Only Reception' printed. The store where we purchased our invitations said that this is common practice and it is correct, etiquette wise, to do so on those cards only.
As for filling in the X of X number - I filled in the second X and no one changed it expect to lower the number. It's not tacky and cuts down on people including others on their invite. Again - the store said that this is common practice and they recommend it as well.

Hey I really like this idea! I didn't want to eliminate all kids and teens because I'm only 20 and so I do know a lot of teens that I would like to invite and putting adult only can sound confusing when their name is on the invite but they're not adults and they're not really kids.
And I also think that by saying that you reserved X amount of seats for the person makes it less condusive to them changing the number of guests like some people had happen (Still can't believe ppl do that! They must think that you forgot to add someone and decided to add it themselves).
Thanks!

Re: No Children on Invite
My best friend added 'Adult Reception' to her invites and was still asked if someone could bring their children. You would think that people would want to have a night out without them!
There is nothing worse than having children running around a wedding reception. There will be plenty of 'children' parties to come, weddings should be about adults celebrating with the couple. I wish that reception halls didn't allow children during evening events that way it would take the blame off of us.
My FH is going to give me a hard time about this too. He doesn't think its a big deal if children are there. I think he's more embarrassed to tell people that they can't bring their children. I will not give in.

Re: No Children on Invite
we wrote
'Cocktail hour to begin at ___o'clock with adult reception to follow' on the reception card.
I also made it clear on the inner envelope. It would read 'Mr. & Mrs. Smith' on the outside envelope, and on the inner i put their first names. Usually if u don't put 'The Smith Family' people get it..but we went to lengths to actually list names on the inner envelope...all this & we actually did have someone respond with their two kids..we just called & nicely explained it was for adults only...i wasn't even having my nieces&nephews there unless they were in the bp! when u put it that way, people understand. its just what u hafta do!
