We are not sure that we want a DJ and are considering picking our own songs and putting them on an ipod to play for the reception. Reasons are that my FH and I personally don't dance and wouldn't want to, and dont prefer the DJ personality. Most of our guests are older and probably wouldn't do too much dancing anyways. We really can't afford live music. Our reception is at Atlantis Marine world, so we hope that people will be checking out the aquarium and walking around. My FH and I have already picked out lots of fun tropical music to play as our theme. Do you think this is a recipe for a boring and disastrous wedding?

Re: No DJ?
Have you thought about just a DJ and no MC- you can tell them exactly what you want and do not want- NO talking, NO getting people out of their seats..if people dance, they dance, if they don't , they don't.
Is your wedding in the evening?
I think many people 'expect' that there will be a DJ or a band...even the older people may want to dance, I think at least having the option would be a good idea...

Re: No DJ?
We did this at our wedding. We listen to all 'indie' music and didn't like the typical DJ personality. My DH put them all on CD with cross fades and we DID hire a DJ just to play it and make sure everything ran smoothly & that the music would be heard through out the hall. We got TONS of compliments on this from the guests, not ONE person complained in ANY way about how we did it. They LOVED that the music was lower in volume and it was all just mellow. We DID hire a casino so that guests would have something to do, but since you have the aquarium, that should entertain your guests. We also had an older crowd (no one under 33).

Re: No DJ?
I think this is fine. There are tons of recent articles on substituting an IPOD for a traditional DJ. If you and your FH don’t dance and most of your guests don’t either, than save your money . . . besides they do have lovely alternatives to keep them entertained since you are getting married at Atlantis.

Re: No DJ?
That's what I did at my wedding.
I made a 'meal' list and a 'dance' list.

Re: No DJ?
I am just having an iPod set up over the restaurant's sound system...I've seen tons of weddings that do this now on the marriage pages in the sunday papers.

Re: No DJ?
Personally, I would never do this. I would not want to deal with any of the issues that may arise (problems with speakers, etc...)- as someone previously suggested, I would do a dj with no mc.

Re: No DJ?
A friend of mine went to 2 IPod weddings this year and said they were a blast.

Re: No DJ?
I think you should consider meeting with a few DJs first and telling them your concerns before you rule it out.
I had my wedding at Atlantis and there were people walking around looking at the fish but we also had people that wanted to dance. We used Vinny with High Voltage and it was great. He wasn't in your face at all but kept the night moving along. Plus, he was very inexpensive.
I agree with the other post that it's also good to have someone there to take care of any issues that arise. You don't want to be worrying about things like that on your wedding day.
Whichever you decide, it will be fun so don't worry!

Re: No DJ?
That is totally up to you. I got married out there in Sept of 04 and we did have a DJ and we have people walking around dancing etc. It will be blast. They also have our wedding pictures hanging up around the aquarium.

Re: No DJ?
We considered it, but there's several issues. One is that you will still have to rent equipment if Atlantis doesn't have a sound system they'll let you use, and that can cost a couple of hundred dollars, plus the rental of the iPod dock. You'll need two iPods--what if something goes wrong with one? And you'll need someone to be in charge of the music, to start and stop the playlists, to make sure it's running smoothly, etc. We didn't want to do that ourselves, and we didn't want to ask a guest to be in charge, we want our guests to have fun. So we hired a DJ after all. It really wasn't that much more money than hiring the equipment, and he's dealing with everything. He's going to play nothing but the music we want, and he's also providing the cocktail hour music and the sound equipment for the ceremony. And it turned out to be cheaper than I was expecting. We're happy with our decision.

I agree with this. I think that they only way you should do this is if you are okay with being completely without music if something malfunctions. With Atlantis, you might be able to get away with that, though.
Also, guests take queues (sp.?) from an MC, like when to sit down, when to dance, when to go home! You don't need a ton of announcements and there are DJs/MCs who will stay out of the way.
