no honeymoon 4 me

Original post by fall2005bride

well ladies...I don't think FH and I will be going on a honeymoon

A little history: last February-FH and I used all of our tax refund $ to pay off credit cards, student loans and bills that we just dont need for after we get hitched....I closed all of my credit card accounts and left 1 of FH accounts open JUST for our honeymoon...WELL...I found out this past weekend that FH has been using it AND it is alost maxxed out again

we are on a tight budget as it is and it is almost impossible for us to pay it off again AND then have extra money for the honeymoon....(we had discussed a cruise cause we are getting married in March and would like something warm)

we have 2 children and money is tight...so I guess I'll have to pass on it...

oh well.....right??????

thanks 4 listening~I think I just need to get that off of my chest.......

Jess

ETA: i'm furious with FH...........

Can you borrow money from your parents against your wedding presents? Sounds like a crummy idea, but if you do something small (a few nights away), it shouldn't cost too much.

You can pay it back immediately! Just to get away from the kids for a night or two...

Also, where will you be living after you get married? If you don't live together now, can someone take the kids for a night or two and you can enjoy each other's company in your new place alone?

Good luck!!!!

(P.S. If you file your tax return asap next year, you might have your refund before the wedding.)

I know the feeling, no HM for us either, but we are staying at the Inn for a night or 2. It is not exactly a vacation, but it is a small getaway. I figure we can go on vacation when we have the money. If money is tight, I would not borrow from the gifts.

Why don't try using the money that you get as gifts after your wedding.

We don't have money left either! We are going to schedule our Honeymoon last minute, right after the wedding for the 3rd week in October...and get some cheap flights! We are planning disney world, so hopefully, we should be able to pull it off with some of the money we are getting. You could always just postpone....or go somewhere just the two of you , even if it isn't the Carribian or antyhing...maybe a cabin in the woods or something?

Re: no honeymoon 4 me

I would be furious! More importantly I would ask you to seriously consider your individual attitudes on spending and savings. I'm one of the older brides on this site and I can tell you I am definitely a saver but not everyone I've dated was and that was always a big roadblock for me. Any therapist, attorney etc. will tell you the most fought about topic among couples is money and that is what breaks up many marriages. It's not the amount of someone's salary it's their attitude towards money that greatly impacts a relationship. Three years ago I dated a doctor (age 42) who brought home a whopping salary (over 300K) but would you believe he was still renting an apt., had an $800 a month car lease and didn't used credit cards because he was tens of thousands of dollars in debt. I made a fraction of his salary and have investments. Well, had we stayed together that alone would have been very stressful to me. My FH's ex-wife was the same way. Only in the last stages of the breakup did she admit to secretly racking up 18K in credit card debt! HE made it and she spent it. She hid the statements from him for years. Be mindful once you are married to someone you are also responsible for any of their bills... including medical. Very early in our relationship I asked my FH about his attitude toward money and thankfully we are on the same page. Actually, as part of our wedding planner we both met with each other's financial planner. Honestly, this is as important as any other aspect of planning.

A good question to ask him is 'If we won $100,000 in the lottery what would you want to do with the money?' If he says he would blow it on jet skis, vacations, etc. and you want a down payment on a house and invest some you need to have a serious conversation.

This is a really important issue. Remember it's for richer or poorer, hopefully, not poorer or poorest.

Good luck.
