Dad is a mailman so I can tell you the reason why you didn't have mail. The first class mail is sorted by a machine in the big facilities (Hicksville and Melville) during the night. Without power, the machine didn't sort the mail and it wasn't brought to your local post office in the morning so they had nothing to deliver. Dad went in and hung out with the other postal workers. They were told they could go home, but they would be charged a day, so they just sat around until it was time to go

I think magazines are bulk mail and might be sorted differently. Same goes for some of the pennysavers and stuff
